Killing Caribbean reefs

I've seen these dust clouds in the Caribbean. They seem to get worse every year. Read what the US Geological Survey says about the causes of coral destruction.

These dust clouds have been blowing over for 100's of years though, it looks like the main problem is what's in the dust, pollutants. They even show how pollution from the U.S and Europe is mixing with the dust clouds and then coming back over to the Carribean and U.S.

Nature has had all it can take. We are screwing everything up.....

The African dust clouds have been dumping material in the Caribbean and along the SE coast of North America for thousands or years. The problem is that the amount of dust has greatly increased over the past several centuries, and there has been an enormous and increasing toxic content in the dust over the past 50 years. The increased amount of dust is largely due to desertification of much of Africa. The destruction of forests to accomodate frequently wasteful agricultural methods has turned what were formerly lush and moist areas into deserts. The rate of desertification in Africa is staggering, and is responsible for many famines.
The toxicity of the dust clouds is due to chemical and organic fertilization, and chemical insecticides. Dried human fecal material and live insects have been found in the dust after it reaches the Caribbean. In addition to poisoning the reefs, the dust clouds are responsible for many human health problems, especially asthma, which has increased more than 1000% on some islands over the past 50 years.
