Just get a Yellowtail Damsel. All my friends and family think mines a "Dory" and I don't bother to correct them, lol.

Now THAT is funny. Another candidate: the azure damsel---hotter temper. But Nemo could be, to scale, paired with a yellowtail....

May be worth mentioning in your Dory post as an alternate look-a-like without as many of the downsides?

After doing research about "Dory" I planned on a yellowtail damsel and told my LFS about it. He actually said it was ok to get Dory as long as they are small. They would be ok in a small tank for 2-3 years and in that time if I haven't gotten a bigger tank by then, he would accept a trade in. He also said that damsels lose their color and cause nothing but trouble in his customers tank.

They won't be okay in a small tank for 2-3 years. My 2 yellow belly regals are 1.5 inches and swim all over the tank. Mine grew a inch in maybe a month or so. They get big fast. These fish are extremely likely to bring disease into your tank as well. So unless you are QTing your fish and have a solid QT process down things will end badly. Remember the purpose of a LFS.. To make $

How small is a small tank?

It's a 36g. I'm looking for alternatives to the damsels. I still want to get a goby but I have a feeling my pair of onyx clowns will be the only other fish in this tank without going bigger

I would put a goby in there with them no problem. I actually have a smaller nano than that at work with both ocellaris clowns and a sharknose goby in it.

Ok, I'm confused! I was originally wanting a yellowtail damsel. The owner at the LFS told me they were really aggressive and told me to get an azure damsel instead.
That little snot is harassing the crap out of my o. clownfish and ticking off my six line wrasse.
I know they are both damsels and can be aggressive, but which one has the more mild temperament? Should I have gotten the yellowtail instead?

The fish store owner is wrong. It's the other way around. The azures are a cranky sort. The yellowtails are more mild-mannered.
