Kinda Newbie seeking advice.

Hey guys,

I left the hobby about 15 years ago. Back then I considered myself fairly informed and even ran a small and successful part time marine maintenance business with some friends. My life and my workload have changed a lot since then. So has the hobby. Everything I know is a bit dated and you guys just blow away anything we were doing back then.

My girlfriend finally talked me back in. I love the stuff and was staying out mostly because I didn't want to spend all my money in a week. Well... I did, or will shortly. That said, I'm very glad to be back.

I set up a 46 hex reef (space requirements made this the most water I could fit) and its doing really well so far. The problem is I used a very old skimmer I still had hiding in a cupboard and, well... its not doing so well no more. Its time to buy a new one and I could really use some advice.

I'm looking at a tunze in sump 9002 or 9005 or, on a recommendation, a marineland in sump. My sump is deep, but because of my happy mangroves I'm limited on footprint, space efficiency is a plus. I also prefer not to have to fiddle with the things too much. I'd like to try a little vodka dosing to see how I like it too.

Please, any advice, suggestions, or horror stories would be greatly appreciated. I may replace my sump pump while I'm at it, so suggestions on the best, least annoying way to get water back up to my tank are also great.

Thanks in advance.

for the size footprint they take, the bermuda aquatics skimmers are suppose to be very nice for their price range. http://www.bermudaaquatics.com/bpshobby.htm

from a review or 2 i saw, once you get them set (which is usually pretty easy) they are a set it & forget it skimmer. they can also be plumbed out of sump if needed

i had a BPS-3C that i never got around to using, but looked to be a very nice skimmer. http://www.bermudaaquatics.com/3C.htm

the bps-3c can be had for about 3 benji's (not including a pump....mag7 or similar)http://www.saltwatercritters.com/inc/sdetail/354

i ended up selling it cause i thought i was gonna have to get out of the hobby (big regret)....i now have an ASM g1 i bought in the sale forums for my current build. heard good things about the asm skimmers as well

I have the 9002 skimmer, I would second james3370, or a used deltic mce 600. Euro Reef RS 80 is another good choice. PS welcome to Reef Central. Good luck
