KISS tank still exist?

I have an 8 month old 6105 that is now waiting for a new power block to show up, yes it is under warranty but for the money it should last longer than 8 months:furious: So I was gonna sell it and move to vortech. But after some reading, you learn you should change the wet side for 75 bucks a year.Another over priced pump that needs to be babied :thumbdown

Then I thought forget these guys let's go controllable hydor, pumps are reasonable but the controller is overpriced:eek2:

Anyone still run a plain old simple tank with sump returns and plain old non controllable power heads? any pics? how is your coral growth.

My softies tank has been up since 1992, still using original power filter (Penguin emperor), original canister filter (fluval), original lighting(3 x 75w VHO - well I do change the bulbs), and original LR and sand. The only upgrade I've made to it is that I changed the glass top for a DIY screen top. It is filled with numerous soft corals, zoas, palys, and mushrooms. The newest fish is a flasher wrasse I put in about 2 years ago. Tap water for water changes, IO salt. No sump, no fuge.

IMHO, KISS is THE way to go.

The more stuff you fiddle with, the more stuff you have to fiddle with, and the better the chance for problems.

I forgot - I did add 2 x k4's about a year ago.

IMO, controllable pumps are nice but by no means necessary for successful coral growth. I have 3 tanks with constant current pumps and a large display with 4 Tunze controllable pumps. Honestly, I can't tell the difference in coral growth.

I think where controllable pumps can make a difference is in a large established tank as they can prevent dead spots from developing. The same effect can be achieved by periodically moving or redirecting your pumps. Again, a luxury of sorts and not a requirement for successful setup.

I have only been reefing for a few years, but I've tried to stay with KISS since the beginning. It just seems more practical, and that way anything that goes well or goes wrong is entirely on me. I can't blame a tank crash on a $400 pump failing :)

I have three pumps in my tank: 2 K4's and a Mag 700 gph return. Tunze skimmer in the sump with some chaeto. I do have a carbon/GFO reactor, but that's because when I had the stuff in bags in the sump it got everywhere.

My coral growth is pretty good, I think. I've found the kinds of corals that grow well in my tank, and stick with those. Montiporas, Milliporas, softies and LPS. My clownfish breed constantly, so I figure something is going right ;) This is a picture from a couple months ago along one side.

I am running all non-controllable pumps, an old school prop driven maxijet that is supposed to push about 3000 gph, (it has been running for 5 years) but I figure 2500 conservatively, a Seio 1500, and a K4, all on a 3' tank. It works well and hasn't failed and did not cost a mortgage payment to buy and only consumes electricity, nothing to buy to keep it working.

Keep the Tunze, Roger will make it like new again and it will run for many years. You bought it used and have no idea what the previous owner did to it. Get it fixed and enjoy it. I almost went for the Vortec craze but decided against it. I prefer my equipment to be as silent as possible and simply work.

+1 I bought my skimmer used and the pump didn't work. Roger replaced it for free without any guff at all. That sealed the deal on my business when I need new things.

Nope Tunze was bought BRAND new, and I wish I could use Roger, wrong country! When it's fixed I am going to keep it just may use the hydor's new #4s as supplement, four 4's should do the trick. Just trying to keep myself convinced not to follow all the hype.

I clean my wetsides regularly (every month or 2) and I have been running my mp40ws for 2 years. I am not sure where the replace wetsides every year comes from?
