I love my convict. I'd say he does just as good of a job as any bristletooth cleaning my tank. He is always trimming hair algae off my returns, and "kissing the glass" looking for algae. Great fish and not seen nearly as often.
I loved my kole I had many years ago. These tangs are likely the 2 most underrated tangs for the hobby. They are peaceful and stay pretty small. The kole is constantly grazing off the LR and glass. It sounds like other's experience has been the same with the convict. I would buy the one that will go best with the color of fish you already have in the tank (it sounds like they either would be agreat contrast in your tank) or which one is tbe better size and in better shape at the LFS.
My kole always swam peacefully with my yellow tang. The two were a beautiful dark brown and yellow contrast.
yes i like them both i had a convict for like a year then when i changed tanks it died so maybe a kole this time since i need help with my hair algae. thanks for everybodys help
DON'T HAVE ANY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH THE CONVICT BUT I HEAR THEY ARE GREAT. AS FAR AS KEEPING THE TANK CLEAN, I WOULD COMPARE THE KOLE WITH A LARGER REALLY FAST TURBO SNAIL. BOTH TANGS LOOK REALLY GOOD IN THEIR OWN WAY IMO AND YES THEY ARE VERY UNDERRATED.
I don't think Koles generally eat hair algae. I don't think the anatomy of their mouth is set up to do that well. I had one for years and he never touched any hair algae, but kept the glass pretty clean.
