Kole Tang in Minimalist aquascaped 60 gallon

Okay so I know the recommended tank size for a kole tang is 70 gallons. My tank is a 60 gallon dimensions are 48x12x18.
It's going to be a minimalist aquascape. My question is, what's the difference between a 60 gallon with minimal rock and open swimming area and a 75 gallon crammed with rocks? Is there really that big of a difference with a few more inches of depth but lots of rock. I plan on only having 4-6 fish and the tang of course would be the largest. The rest will be on the smaller side.

My tank is a 75 gal & I have a Kole tang that honestly only uses about 1/3rd of the tank.
The Kole should be fine.

I generally like big, long tanks for tangs. But I think a Kole in your tank would do just fine. . Be sure to QT it first.

I just put one in my 4' 75g, and I think it is really the length that matters with this fish. It spends the majority of the time in the lower half of the tank. Keep in mind that they eat and poop a LOT, so biological filtration will be really important, particularly if you want to keep any other larger fish.

Tangs really need much more room to swim. You'd be OK with a small specimen for a little while, though when it gets close to it's mature size it would need to be in a larger aquarium. Good luck and keep us posted on how everything goes! :)

Oh yeah... Don't forget that tangs "just keep swimming!" kekeke. They love swimming and swimming and swimming some more and then a little more :P Happy Holidays!

Thanks for the replies. Though the tank will have a minimalist aquascape, which essentially will decrease the biological filtration through live rock, I will be running an algae turf scrubber in addition to a protein skimmer so I should have adequate means of filtration. It won't be for some time though until I get this tank with fish in it.

I've heard kole tangs don't do very well in QT....can somebody explain why?

There was a thread on this a while back, you may be able to find it searching the forum. I think the consensus was "pure myth". I agree. There is no conceivable reason (at least to me) why any fish would not do well in a QT. IMO, fish acclimate faster and easier in a QT than any DT; no competition, peace & quiet, etc. Of course, the tangs need veggies to make up for the lack of LR and some wrasse need substrate. I'm just guessing that the myth started as another excuse not to use a QT on all fish.

I read up on it and I believe the 'myth' comes from kole tangs not doing well when treated with copper. Still doesn't mean you can't QT though. It's just advisable not to treat them with copper.
