Kole Tang in this tank?

Shallow Reef

New member
Hi

Would I be okay to add a kole tang to a 300 liter or so tank. The measurements are 48" x 30" x 16" height? Its going to be a very open tank with rock work in the middle and 1ft of open swimming space all around the rock work in the middle. I'm looking for a small juvi but I also want to know as it grows will I need to move it on? Will the height be a problem for this fish as its fairly shallow?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Kole tang should be happy in that size tank especially with the extra width of the tank. I don't see the height as a problem. Others might have better insight for you. But in my opinion I would day a kole would be quite happy in that size tank

Do you know what that makes me really happy to hear as I really want one and I have never kept a Tang before. I would still love to get it as a juvenile Tang and watch it grow.

Thanks theaquareef ever so much for posting in. I will be making a tank thread on here eventually but I am just starting the setup, tank is here but cabinet is getting built soon.

I have had 3 different kole tangs in a tank that was 48x18x21 or a 75 gal. And all were happy and ate like pigs especially liked cleaning the glass rock and anything else that had a little algae on it. One of my favorite fish. I've had a regular kole, a blue eye, and a yellow eye. Your welcome:) best of luck, it's always nice to watch a young tang grow and be healthy.

Oh right I thought there were different looking kole tangs when I typed the name in on google images lol. Are those 3 all the types of kole tangs or are there more and do they have specific names if I were to ask a lfs to get one in?

Thanks

I've had a yellow eye for over 15 years. He'll do well in your tank. Mine's now in a 125 Reef. Livin' the good life. They're cool and tough.

I've seen a bunch of Kole tangs in Hawaii. They tend to hang out around rock work and eat algae. Not big swimmers like some other tangs. A 4ft tank is suitable.

Yellow Eye Kole Tangs are what they are commonly called, Ctenochaetus strigosus. Then there's C. truncatus which look very similar, except have all spots throughout their body vs. spots on the face and lines down the sides like C. strigosus. There is also C. binotatus which has blue eyes and two spots at the base of the tail. Finally, there is C. flavicauda, which again looks similar except has a white tail (and are generally hard to come by).

The more places it has to hide the happier the tang will be

Thanks I will keep that in mind.

Thanks, just what I needed to know. It will probably come down to what's available.
