Kolorscape Playsand

Hey-

I am new to the hobby and am about to acquire a 55g tank.

I have been doing some research and think I am heading toward the Berlin Method. I know this requires a DSB for filtration, however that much live sand is very expensive.

I read a thread:

It seems like this playsand would be a good starting point. Does anyone know any stores in the area that carry it? Also, would buying some amount of live sand be helpful?

Thanks!
Matt

from the reading it would seem that sand is ok to use.
i don't know where you would get it.

to make the sand "live" you only need to seed your tank with some already live sand.
you could either buy a bag of the stuff from a store, or a local reefer would probably help you out by giving you a cup of their already live sand. then you just have to wait.

That looks promising. If you find some, let us know!!!

I may be wrong, but I've always been under the impression that the "live sand" they sell at the store = sand + bacteria. (Why bother???)

You are going to get bacteria wether you use live or dry sand. I guess it would cycle faster if it were pre seeded with bacteria.

You definetaly want to get sand samples from people's fuges and things like that, as it's the critters that make a DSB work, not just the bacteria.

Kolorscape is $4 for a 10lb. bag and all it takes to make it "live" is a few weeks and some patience! We have pallets of the stuff here in upstate New York. I'm using it on my new 65g combined with a bag or two of Araga-Live. A lot of reefers in my area are using it.
