Hey guys,

i remember reading on a past thread on KolorScape, but it didnt say what the answer to it was. Check this out . I got it at Home Depot in Clifton Park FWIW. Anyone using it? I needed it for my new nano later this week. My jawfish will go in this nano, so he will be borrowing in it, so i want to make sure its good.

I also tested it.

I used vinegar (a dilute form of acetic acid) and concentrated glacial acetic acid....some will dissolve, but a good deal won't. Didn't do any careful measurements, but I'd say right around 50% or less dissolved...assumed the rest is silica (looked like it to me).

Note...I didn't comment at all about the use of silica as a substrate...just the results of my test. btw, I chose not to buy it.

Do you know of anyone local that has southdown? i only need to fill a 12 gallon nano, maybe ill just spring the extra couple of bucks for caribsea.

You can't get ahold of southdown or yard right around here any more. Rainer and I did a fairly exhaustive search this year, even travling to cortland on word that they had it there. No luck! The manager of the agway we went to there said he would order us a pallet if he could get ahold of it, no luck. I think between the two of us we called or went to just about every agway, homedepot and lowes from albany to saratoga to utica. I think it is either pay for the carbi sea or take your chances with the kolor scape.

Thanks for the link, I'm going to read the article in the link when I get the chance.

i would be very carful what i use in my tank, my own words to the wise...

I used 150# or other depot sand with silica, and have a minor diatom bloom just for u'r information, i would also make sure u seed the sand very well for the jaw fiish saw he has pleanty of microfauna to eat.

If u need to seed u'r sand i can give somr to seed in a area from my tank where it about 70% ocean sand and caribsea...../>?

peace, till later

yeah, im only filling a 12 gallon, so ill spend the extra ten bucks, no big deal. just thought i would share with the group in case it was the good stuff. Monyi, thanks for the offer, but i have a 50 gallon of my own that i can use. My plan is to use a cup full of my own sand, around 10lbs of baserock i have lying around, and 5 lbs of liverock from my current tank. Ill keep everyone posted.

Thanks again,

Jeff
