Kong's Restored BB (90g)

Astreas and Turbos.... i had bad luck with ceriths. Appearantly I wasnt using the "right" ones (there are several different species, even in the same area, and only certain ones eat detritus). So, you need the "right" ceriths, and they do good jobs at sitting in any piles of detritus you may have (like heavy astrea poop), and processing it to make it lighter/smaller.
 
Oh, and to give a small update:

so far everything is settling in nicely. The 5 cardinals are doing well so far, and last night I added 12 more from a LFS.. so that's 17 cardinals! I dont expect them all to make it, but hopefully I can have a respectable school when all is said and done.

I am also planning to give away my blue/green chromis... they have just become so big due to all of the feedings, and they will only get bigger! Now with the new, smaller cardinals in, all the fish in the tank appear that much larger.

I am hoping to get some new pics in a couple of weeks, once most of the tips/dead skeleton have been covered by new growth.

So far everyone is growing/rebounding, except my [once large] green millepora. It is actually covered in algae and is difficult for me to see the base tissue. The dying skeleton is just a perfect fuel source for algae, so it's very hard to keep it off of there.

I really love your philosophy of heavy (did I say HEAVY?) flow, heavy skimming, RDSB, and filter socks.

I've been debating on whether to get a new computer or a Aquacontroller III for my tank for the holidays, but your setup is really making me think about just going for some vortechs or tunze streams.

Just picked up a 90 and im gonna copy off your rock work if you dont mind. youre right about the less rock it looks more reef than a bunch of rocks stack together! what do you think of lyretail? thats more in mt ball park as far as the price. Thanks again for sharing you pics!

Well, the RDSB and filter socks are new for me. So far, the socks are working out well. I clean them out every couple/few days, and it only takes a couple minutes. We'll see how the RDSB works out long term, i'm not excited about it, what with potential risks of ****ing off such a large biomass, but we'll see :)

Go for it! I love how the rocks turned out. This is the first own aquascape I have fallen in love with, and have no intentions of changing!

Lyretails are hardy and cheap, but a little aggressive, like Bartlett's, so theyre fine if you dont intend on adding delicate peaceful fish.
 
Hey folks,

Corals are kicking BUTT, and I am having DAILY tissue growth on several corals.. things are picking up, and moving FAST... have another 25g W/C setup ready to go.

I have new photos of my Threadfin Cardinals (Apogon Leptacanthus). Right I count my school at 14.. which means 1 is missing... or he hides everytime I try to count.. cause its really hard to count them.

The majority are eating, which is great, so I hope the rest of them make it! I plan to get rid of my Blue/Green chromis, since they look so big compared to my little guys!

For those who are just catching on to this thread, I have enlisted the help of Kong a while ago. Very helpful!!!!

I'm building my 220 based on heavy flow, little rock, big big skimmer. I couldn't be happier right now with my 24 fish. I get to start corals after the holiday's i'm so exicited....
 
Those are very unique cardinals.

You're getting that much coral growth purely on kalkwasser topoffs and waterchanges? Jebus...
 
Hurley: I got rid of him.. he got too big too fast, and wasnt eating enough corraline to justify all of the space he took!

I am interested in finding a smaller urchin however. Oh, also, the longspine's poop was WAY too heavy. The flow in my tank had issues getting it to the skimmer, because they poop these dense hard grains that look like sand.
 
Kong, I am really glad to see your tank turning around. I had the same experience with longspines growing too big too fast. Most other urchins are great however... pincushion, tuxedo, rock-boring, and pencil have been fine in my tank. They do have heavy poop though, not sure any urchin will change that.

Thats funny, I just realized BB guys rate their inhabitants by the weight of their poo!!! :rollface:

Actually, the RDSB has really messed with my skimmate production (prolly the filter socks, too) in a bad way. It's been much harder to get consistant skimmate, and during the first 2 weeks, I pulled out very little skimmate.

I think it was due to the dust still coming off of the sand.

I am not sure I will run the RDSB long term, because I installed it assuming I wouldnt figure out what else was killing my corals. Once I stopped feeding that food, the corals came back, which was just a couple weeks after the RDSB was installed -- not enough time for it to do anything.

..and I just cant feel comfortable with all of the resources the RDSB is going to require to keep it happy. It will be a large drain on my alkalinity, and since I only depend on kalkwasser for supplementation I dont know if that can keep up with it. And if I ever mess up and something in the tank becomes too high or too low too fast, I'm afraid it might crash.

If my nitrates stay at ~5ppm without a RDSB (they were at 7 with a real lack of water changes and me not using a filter sock), I really dont see that hurting either the corals, or the fish, but we'll see.

Which one ate corraline the best?
 
I couldn't tell you :( . I have never had much coralline to begin with anyway. If you are wanting it to eat off the glass though, I can tell you that I have only seen the pincushion and the tuxedo on the glass.
 
I just got in two WIRELESS controllers for my Vortechs... replaced the ones on the left and right, and have them in reef crest mode, so they should be powering up and down randomly very fast.

Very cool feature to have, because really, I dont need crazy flow ALL of the time.. I just need strong gusts every once in a while to pickup any poop.

Since I got the 3 vortechs in and bevelled the starboard, I have had 0 dead spots in the tank. I dont have to siphon anywhere.. it all gets carried down into the filter sock or skimmer.



I am down to 7 threadfins... so I lost 11... very sad. All 7 are eating. Of the ones that died, NONE had began eating yet, so I think that's an important level for them to reach.

The LFS has 5 little ones left.. of which a few are interested in eating, so I will try to buy the ones that are eating and add them to my school.



Corals are all kicking butt.. LPS are growing again and SPS are growing at really impressive rates..


Hopefully I can take a new FTS shortly to show off the new corals I purchased from DFS/LA/DD
