Koralia 3 or 4.

Right now I have 2xSeio 620's in a 55g set-up. My SPS is starting to fill in so I think its time to bump up the flow. What would be better the 3's or 4's? I'm waiting for the new Hydor's to arrive with the controller. I hope its not a myth. I also have 2" shallow sand bed. I attatched a pic.

I know it sometimes takes a while to get a reply, but with the amount of traffic in this thread I figured I'd get atleast one hit by now. Come on guys, please.

if youre moving from a 620 gph power head id probably go with the k3's also
k4's push around 1200gph and in a 4' long tank thats a bit much
i also heard that the koralia controller will only be able to control a newer model of the koralia ph's and not the previous models that are currently out
but i really dont know if theres any truth to that

In my 120 i run 2 1's and 2 2's I found anything more blew my softies around too much but mine are mounted high and blow down. Have them on an Ocean Pulse wave maker, had some chatter at first on start up but now fine.

This Is true I have 2 K4 and Im in a constant battle redirecting them because Its just over kill on the softies. I think even the 3's are pushing It. And what Is this new Hydor with a controller about, kinda curious.

Thanks you all for the feedback. I'm waiting to purchase the new model with the controller when they arrive stateside. I keep SPS so I need the flow, but I also do not need a sandstorm and tissue loss. I would of course point them up ward toward the glass on opposite sides to give a random indirect flow.

I run a mixed reef 55g. Leaning more toward SPS now.
I have 2 K2's, which work fine. + mag 5 return.
But wish I would of went with one K2 for the front and one K3 for the back.
I also have more rock in my tank which slows down the flow some.

Sorry to jump in but i have to ask this. does any one use the protection/reducer cap on their korilias? if so do this change the flow of the ph?

With SPS flow can be more important then lighting. Also powerhead placement is important. 2 powerheads at each end facing each other close to the top leave low bottom flow and poor total water circulation but offsetting them mid to low facing front center glass could be much better then adding another powerhead. I think you could use one more mb a 2 or 3 and get them placed so you get good flow everywhere.

Also wavemakers do nothing for water flow. They could be cool but i would add another powerhead then your wavemaker.

Looks like that new controller isn't going to work with our existing Koralias. My impression is that it is designed for a new 12v (probably DC) version of the koralia.

demonsp, i realize the importance of flow and I appreciate your feedback. Having such a narrow tank makes placement problematic. The Seio I have currently and their position have worked fine for me. They meet in the middle at different levels, mix it up and push the water to the sides of the tank. When my water level goes down they even create small eddies on the surface. They also provide surface agitation to help promote gas exchange. My SPS have polyp extension 24hr a day. As my corals grow I want to add more flow. My LPS on the bottom always have their stingers and polyps open swaying in the current. The 4'at 1200gph my be too much, thats why I may look into the 3's at 850gph each. Yeah the wave maker is cool by not necessary and may even shorten the life of the PH.

I have a K3 and a Seio in my 55 mixed. I want to get another K3 to replace the Seio. The side with the K3 on it is completely covered with flow from top to bottom, and side to side. Two K3's should be perfect.

Question was about flow. The pic shows two powerheads facing up and cant see this doing much for the bottom where the better O2 supply will be in the top half and where uneatin food ,waste and other debris will be left to collect and after time cause problems. MB its an old pic.
And i agree with adding one more. You mentioned a controler so i thought i would add that in.
Looks like your off to a good start though.

I have a 75gal with 2 #3's. I have them about 3 inches from the surface of the water ever so slightly pointing down and the surface looks like a choppy ocean and I get nice movement down low also. I was going to add a 3rd for the back, but I purchased a flow accelerator nozzle for my return and have it pointing down blowing across the middle of the tank. It works just as good as a powerhead in there. My return barely moved any water before.

demonsp, thanks, but what I stated is from what I see in the tank as the water moves around the corals and rock. The feed to the tank from my Mag 3 used to run my skimmer also pushes water down behind the rock structure which is off the back wall. Weekly 10%water changes, and blowing the rock with a small PH also help reduce any detritus that may build up in an area of low flow. Yes, I need more flow so was looking to see which PH would meet my needs, the K3 or K4. Since the tank is sumpless without a closed loop I dont want a tank cluttered with PH's. I do appreciate your observation and comments deduced from the picture though. Peace .
