L.Mac. Tank

Diet Plain

Just thought I'd update on my L.Maculata that I bought some months ago since I haven't yet.

He is housed in a 150g with some tank mates: Black Volitan, Red Volitan, Walking Batfish, Sailfin Tang, Blue Spotted Grouper, and 3 Green Chromis. All have been doing very well with no fighting amongst them. The only fighting that has happened has been between the mantis and a brittle star. I fed the mantis one day and the brittle star literally went into his hole and stole it from him, the mantis whacked him a few times, but then stopped when I proceeded to give him another piece of shrimp.

Bare with the photo's as I was fooling around with my camera and flash and colors and whatnot. Comments/Questions/Criticism is welcome :).

The L.Mac's burrow is in the very right end of the tank, I add more and more sand to it every week.

lionfish are typically not good tank mates with shrimp or most likely mantis shrimp. i'm guessing eventually one is going to kill the other.

it sounds like the mantis has gotten complacent and chooses not too risk it's rapts on the huge fish that are its' tankmates. If the fish are too big to spear, and the mantis stays in its burrow I'd say everything would be fine.....probably lol.

He is around 3-4" atm and I do believe the fish are a little large for his taste atm except for the chromis which were actually food for my pseudosquilla i had kept before.

I've kept mantis with lionfish before and have had 0 problems. As long as I keep all the tankmates well fed they hardly ever interact in a bad way with eachother.

they have been doing great, and I'm very glad that they have. The mantis was actually in the LFS for months before I took the chance and I'm glad I did.

ticking time bomb imo, but i hope it continues to work out for you anyways. it is a nice combo of critters in there even if it's a mix i would never try.

When the L.Mac. gets bigger I do plan to move him to a seperate tank, for fear that he might think the lions/tang/grouper aren't too small to take. But for now he will remain.

My L.Mac had been in his burrow for atleast a month or 2 without opening up so I feared he had died. I was moving around rocks and substrate and even started diggin in his burrow but he did not come out. Later on that day, to my suprise, he peeked his little head out. I was very happy that he didn't pass, Everything had been doing so fine I would have been very dissapointed. All the tank-mates are still doing great and a frogfish and grouper have been added. Just thought I'd update, this is my longest living mantis and I'd love to see him reach his full length. :)
