he neglected to mention that you can calibrate the salinity tester with natural seawater and if its got bubles on the floater then it gives false readings.

you need to give it a good tap to dislodge ant bubbles there might be on the needle.

if what your are saying is true then he says one thing in his video's and then believes and does another outside the public eye. Alot of the criticism he gets is from the things he says and the way he says it. Most of the tanks he shows on his website do not have a skimmer so be suprised because its true.I have seen him dump supplements without meassuring or testing, no maybe he didn't record that part where he tested but, he still dumped it without meassuring the video doesn't lie. He did buy a refractometer and hated the fact that he even used the thing he just seemed disgusted at the very sight of it, and thats the kind of stuff that offends me along with the little stabs he takes at us for using the "TOOLS" (not toys as jim calls them) that we do. Jim personally doesn't bother me, how could he I don't know him. But he offends me with him "I'm on another level" (yes those are his words) comments and then turn around and says "I'll float them fish for a half an hour and then dump them in" with some really ick prone fish. That is not expert, pro service guy things in my book. The fact that your tank has skimmers doesn't mean squat I'm sure you told him the you wanted them and as any service guy would he will go along, the issue is he don't inform the client that doesn't know anything about the hobby the benefits of a skimmer? IMO a skimmer will do far more for any tank than bioballs wheel, as there are other things for bacteria to grow on there is only one way to skim so if I had a choice the skimmer wins hand down. So anyway my point is that how I think about Jims services are more based on the things that he has actually said on video rather than what I have seen on video. and last but not least how much experience Jim has doesn't mean much to me because I know guys that have been doing their job for a long long long time that still don't know what they are doing. So just because somebody has been doing something for 30 plus years doesn't necessarily mean they are doing something the best way. As far as your pics, you really think that standing on that stool like that is a good idea? Those are big tanks....I like the eel the most.

I completely understand why you come to your conclusions.. The only rebuttal I have to that is this: How many times have you seen a cooking show where the chef says to put a tablespoon or a cup in and he just throws some of the stuff in the bowl.?? After 20 years of doing the same thing as a profession, I suppose its easy to become a bit lackadaisical. I'm also sure the recipe came out great. Doesn't make it right but it doesn't always make it wrong either. Just unorthodox to some.

I think the biggest lesson to be learned from this is that if your going to put this stuff out there to be judged by peers, either think everything through as people might read too much into things or be willing to be judged based on those actions. Last thing I will say is that he does have a pretty high end list of clients that have utilized his services for many years and from what I have seen, they have good reason.

As for standing on my stool (like that).. I've been doing that for 20 years and my feet still don't stink! :eek1: Actually, I still do to this date.. Never slipped once. Knock on wood. :smokin:

I wonder what Gorby was thinking when you were in the tank!:eek1:

I always wondered that myself. At one point he tried to push me with his snout. He really did love to be handled. He would let me pick him up and take him out of the tank. It came in handy after the big earthquake out here and it also came in handy when I did major tank overhauls. I could pick him up and put him in a trash can full of water. My friends were always amazed at how much he loved the attention.

Now in an attempt to diffuse this thread (sorry about the hijack), my wife scanned more of those pictures and I figure I might as well post them.

Here is the complete 'swimming with fishes' birthday splash sequence. I need to clean these up in photo shop because they are priceless!
Disclaimer: Kids, don't try this at home!!

Great pictures. I don't know much about other species of eels but it seems like the Green Moray is a people lover. I also have a great respect for them. Used to go lobstering all the time poking sticks in holes I probably shouldn't have. What scared me the most wasn't sharks but eels coming out to bite down on me and not let go while they were anchored down in the rocks. Though when I did come across them I would wait outside their door and many times they would come out to check me out. I'd wait until they were complete out of their home before I'd play with them. Down in the Key's there was one famous one that lot of people got to know and fed all the time. I can't remember his name they gave him but he lived in the waters of the Penny Camp state park.

slief, those are awesome photos! I enjoy watching Jim's videos. They truly depict the trials and tribulations of an aquarium service guy, something I have first hand experience with.

Now, on to a point I would like to make. The original poster states that he doesnt have time to make his own videos. I would wager that if he took the time he used to post comments on this thread, that he could easily have made a video. And I am sure, by the OP's own judgment, that it would be much better than anything Jim could ever do.

I will not be sticking around this thread, either.

and the differance between me and the lafishguy is i can understand your piont and yes I probably would have time if i wasn't posting I will agree and respect the fact that you are right(something lafishguy wounld never do) BUT I am also on here researching because this hobby takes constant reseaching and learning (something else lafishguy wouldn't do). The truth is I just don't care to make video's,... someday mabe,... but for now i'll learn from others.
On another note I never said that I hated jim, OR that I didn't enjoy his video's, I infact like his video's, I repect his determination and drive, and I can see him giving most of his time to the hobby, and it'great he takes the time to make vids to share with us, but all of this leaves me conflicted because they go against alot things that I was taught about this hobby, Jim really does seem like a likable guy I have no problem with him personally.
as for me making vids I really havn't ever learned how to upload a video or know if my camera would take good enough video but I will try in the future, I have been adding sand to my tank so mabe I will record the next time I do to show folk's how to add sand to a running aquarium.

I cannot believe this is actually a topic of discussion on this message board.
Mr. Badasswrasse bashes this guy like he was the top authority on the subject of reef aquariums! It's astonshing to me that you hang out here and dole out information like your the leading expert on this subject....all without an ounce of real credibility or real scientific background.
Seems to me LA Fish Guy was maintaining reef aquariums while you were most likely still crapping in your diapers. At least Jim is actually doing things! Real life activity! I don't think he's sitting in his parents basement bashing people over the internet!
As it turns out, like "slief" has mentioned in one of his posts, Jim seems to have a lengthy list of high end clientele in the greater Los Angeles area. I'm guessing these are some fairly well known type people. If his techniques and practices are wrong, chances are he would not be in business very long as I bet there are other maintenance providers there that would be dying for his clients.
I think we should all get a life and figure out what really matters...like getting our citizens back to work and pick up our failing country from the shithole it's now in.

This thread has really taken a turn towards...

"I MUST prove my point to EVERYBODY because everybody MUST know that THIS GUY IS WRONG." 6 pages worth!!!!!!!

I felt the ethical thing to do was to privately contact Jim and give him a heads up on the thread since he is the subject of public ridicule.
Turns out he know all about the thread and chooses not to participate. Not because he knows hes wrong but because he isnt interested in the negativity. 500 ponits for Jim!!

I know the OP has to have the last word in "his" thread which is why we are at 6 pages....or maybe 7 now? So I will reisgn from it now. ;-)
