LaCl Reactor

Tested about 2:30 this afternoon. .036! Seems odd to me so maybe I didn't conduct yesterday's test accurately? I have been catching myself coming and going!! Don't know but will test again for the next couple/few days so I can see whether or not a pattern develops.

If you are relying on a Hanna Checker, then all bets are off. They tend to be rather poor at returning consistent or accurate results (I have gone through two meters and several hundred reagent packets).

HaHa!! As you can tell, I'm a night owl :=0) Well, I don't know what to think. The first test was .08 and the second, which immediately followed, .05 (almost .06). I did mess with the sand and blew off the rocks so I'm thinking that. I did a WC either Thurs or Fri as I'm getting ready for my SPS shipment. Tuesday they should be here, I hope! They were delayed because of the storms Baltimore got :( So, anyway, I'm going to test again as I don't want the PO4 to be high when the corals come, I'm still at 15 every 7:15....

Terri_ann, I read your posts and i question why you are worried about a difference between a .08 and a .05 reading. I mentioned this earlier in this thread that the Hanna checker has a "Precision: ±0.04 ppm (mg/L) ±4% of reading @ 25°C". So to have a difference within that range is normal.
I just didn't think you need to worry so much and check every day.
Just my 2cents.
I hope this doesn't come across in any other way than a question.

No problem with your comments. I'm TERRIBLE when it comes to math so it's difficult for me to interpret the +/- .04 unless someone explains it to me :uhoh3: So if the reading is .08 and using the +/-. does that mean the possible variance could be between .12 and .04?

Yes that is exactly what that means. You will also get a variance do to temp changes somewhat. So my suggestion is that you don't need to test multiple times a day or even every day.

Yay! So when there is that much variance, how do we go about determining what level we want our PO4 to be? So if I want PO4 to read 0.01 when testing, it actually could be .05 So dosing LaCl we should look to have the Hanna read .01, correct? Would there be a risk of free/unreacted LaCl by shooting for .01?

Yes you can have free unreacted LaCl3 if your shooting for something that low. The tests are good for plus on minus .03. You really never want to be less than .03-.04. This is why I keep telling you that you are crazy to shoot so low :P

I still shoot for .07 . My SPS seem to grow quite well near that range.

That is why I was saying to slow down on changing the flow. Get to a happy medium.

Then slowly adjust. There will be a time where it will just NOT decrease anymore.

Fed the corals last night some cyclopeeze. Tested today @ 12:30pm .013 . Do you think it's too low? I have it at 15 secs every 7:15. What if I went to 15 at 7:30? I'll wait for your reply Worm! :0) Going to feed the fishes! They're goig to get fat if I keep feeding then 2 o3 times a day! lol

Eventually it will need to be adjusted longer. Because it will only leach so much.

at 7:30 it will slowly increase.

If I would do changes it would be more like 3 seconds at a bump... (7:18 7:21 7:24 7:27) but not test hourly. Once a day works (really every other day) for that now that you found your mark.
