LAK's 15g Cube

I'm really excited about the stand! I'm not sure when it will be set up though....but I know it won't happen this weekend.

I'm headed up to Penn State University in a few hours to watch my brother play for a State Championship tonight! I can't wait!!!

Decided to get a little ambitious and try to construct a door for the stand... actually turned out pretty nice.

Now all I need to do is add some trim pieces, and finish sanding the door... then everything will be ready for paint.

Looks great TJ for your first attempt at fabricating a panel style door. I'm beggining to expect no less than top notch work from you after all the well thought out and excellent quality projects you've posted and shared with us so far. Laura should feel lucky she has you in her corner for her first tank build. WTG.

looks great! i am building a small stand for my frag tank as well!
Thanks. I made some mistakes here and there, but overall I'm happy with how it is turning out. It'll be nice to get the trim on tomorrow, then get it painted.

One thing... I wish we would've used a nicer wood than the pine we picked up. I think Sean used Birch on the stand for my rimless, and it sanded down so much nicer. After sanding the pine down a bunch of times... it still has a rough feel to it.

But we were throwing together a "budget" stand, and I think we have about $60 into it. So I really can't complain that much.

Thanks Harold. :)

thats a nice little stand.

if you want to get it perfectly smooth you can run a thin layre ( less than 1/64")of bondo over the surface with a drywall taping knife. then you can sand that down to a perfectly smooth finish. i dont know if the current finish erks you that bad because the whole bondo thing is alot of work.

i just mention that because the guy who built the stand for my biocube sanded and painted the side panels black but you can still see all the wood grains. the front is smooth though, i dont know what he did for that?

Thanks Chris.

It sounds like your guy did the same thing I did for the stand. The front face frame is built out of a higher quality pine wood. The top, bottom, and sides were made with the large pine sheet.

Laura's stand is trimmed out and ready for paint. I may try and get the first coat on tomorrow. I'm not going to be able to spray it like I had originally planned, so hopefully it turns out alright.

Whats the worst that can happen? you dont like the fiinish and you have to sand it down and apply another coat. We have faith in you're ability, GO FOR IT!
