Landlords Log - Breeding Gold Striped Maroon Clowns

Well it is official. My GSM's laid their second batch of eggs into the flower pot on Friday 12/04/2009. With that being said I am going to again document my experience with trying to bring up a couple batches, as I did in a previous thread with Tomato Clowns:

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1604340

Hopefully I will be able to carry over some of the lessons I learned with those guys to these guys. We'll see how it goes. Anyways... I spent the week-end getting a new shelf build onto my current breeding system so I could have a place to put the 5.5 gallon larval tanks I will be using again. The wife finally put her foot down :) and said no more babies, or rotifers, in the living room anymore.

Placed an order for some rotifers this morning, should have them by Wednesday. Chances are slim (very slim) that I will have a decent sized culture by the Friday / Saturday projected hatch night but we'll see how it goes. May just skip this one and build up a strong culture for the first shot and spend this round getting back into the swing of collecting larvae. I do have them laying in a flower pot but I am hesitant to remove it for fear of not getting another batch of eggs. These GSM's are pretty skittish, they rarely leave the pot (for the last 6 months!). On the bright side, my broodstock system is set up whereby water is pulled from the surface through a flexible tube into my sump. The plastic tubing is simply laid into a large "T" that feeds a central drain. The tubing can be removed from the "T" and pointed towards a bucket. All I will need to do is shine a light right over drain whirlpool in the broodstock tank and they should be sucked right into my bucket.

We'll see how "easy" this actually is

I'll be documenting with my Olympus Point and Click again as well. Photos will be coming shortly. Going to try and do about 4 or 5 batches (depending on success or failure) maybe more. In the end I'm looking to get around 150-200 past meta. It'll take another year or so for me to offload them in my area, so this should be a sufficient enough amount.

I'm hoping this will be as enjoyable as my Tomato's and hopefully anyone reading will at least get some use out of my data :)

Questions, comments, opinions, criticisms, etc... are all welcome. About the only questions or topics I will not be discussing concern price, resale, and all of that jazz. I do this for fun! There is no profit to be made as a hobbyiest breeder and most everything I raise gets pretty much given away as it is so.....moving on. See ya in a couple days when the food shows up in the mail.

Take Care

Thanks for all the encouragement. With the new picture functionality of the RC software I shouldn't have any excuses for not posting up pictures. My biggest issue last time was that my firewall here at work prevents access to the hosting websites and I do not even want to look at another computer by the time I get home

In any case I spent the day cleaning out my basement fishroom getting myself all prepared for the festivities. I sanitized a couple of 5.5 gallon tanks, heaters, and the rotifer buckets I will be using. I have been seeding my sponge filters for months in the sump of the breeding rack. Gotta run another electrical line to power up an air pump (still to purchase), heaters, etc...

Did an inventory on my larval food supply. It is amazing how long the Otohime starter packs actually last. I have plenty of A, B1, and B2. I have been feeding my Tomato clowns the C1 and C2 since May and am just about out. Well worth the price paid for sure. Rots will arrive on Wednesday, salt water has been mixed to 1.020 sg in anticipation of their arrival.

I'll probably spend the afternoon / early evening doing a bit of spring cleaning to the breeder rack. I am embarrased to say that I have not done any water changes since setting it up. I am pretty sure the Nitrates are through the roof, the water is a bit yellow and their is a plethora of algaes / aiptasia. On the plus side the microfauna abounds. Many pods, worms, asterinas :( , etc... At least it was good enough to get the GSM's laying... Being that there is a complete lack of clutter in the tanks it should clean up in short order.

Take Care and Thanks again for the kind words

:) Kurt

Just a quick update, the food has arrived. Need to express my thanks to Reeds for excellent service once again. Received a nice dense bag of rotifers yesterday. Thank the stars they do not require a heat pack. The box sat in the cold outside for awhile. After a 4 hour period with no electricty I was able to get the bag split into three cultures and things are now back on track for my weekend hatch.

Not thinking I will have a dense enough culture by hatch night to support a complete hatching by any means, which is frustrating because I hate waiting for the next round, but I'll do what I can :) .

Again thanks to the folks at Reeds-Mariculture for good customer support.

Have a Great Day!

:) Kurt

So you lost power with the strong winds that came through here yesterday? That's rough...

Post some pictures of your fishroom when you get it all cleaned up! :) I'd love to see what you did.

BTW: A group at CincyReef is going to start our journey in breeding, first attempting to breed Banggai Cardinal. It's all part of an education track we're starting in 2010. We are going to make the official announcement next month when Anthony Calfo is in town doing his talk at our January meeting. (the 14th)

Later!

It's all cleaned up just need to actually take some darn pictures of it. Yes Alexandria lots power to about 2000 customers me being one of them. Had the generator going along with the big orange spiderweb of extensions cords. All 11 tanks (Breeding Setup, +Big SPS reef,+Latezonatus LPS tank) were up and running. Didn't have enough cords to power the fridge, priorities, ya know

IIRC - Drimo was talking to me about breeding bangaii's at the last swap. Is there any info regarding the Eduaction Track on the CincyReef site????

Thanks

Kurt

Not yet, we're still putting it together. We have a tank cycling at 30mini's place to put the large order of Banggai juveniles in when we get them so they can pair up.

We welcome any input/feedback you might have moving forward.

Very cool idea! I look forward to checking out that content, and perhaps participating in the dialogue. I was tempted yesterday to pick up some banggai's from Jack's in Cold Spring. They got in like 7 or 8 good looking specimens, hmmmm.

Got my wife diamond earrings for Xmas, perhaps she won't be opposed to another tank or two now! Gotta ride the waves when they come in!

Thinking that I'll be up late tonight with the first hatch I'm attempting to collect from the GSM pair. Tonight will be the seventh day after laying so we'll see what happens. The rotifer culture in the larval tank is a bit on the low side but I should be able to harvest out of the two bucket cultures I have going to beef it up a bit. In a way I'm hoping for a smaller sized hatch so that I do not have a food shortage issue.

Here are a couple pictures of the clutch from last night.

Happy Friday everybody!

Good luck tonight!

I'll be up tomorrow night making my first attempt at raising ocellaris.

Thanks Bill. You'll have a blast. Just be ready for unexpected things and take them lightly. Once you get the knack for it, you'll be hooked.

Very cool, Kurt! Good luck tonight! You should still have a couple days to beef up the rotifers since the larvae can survive off their yolk sac for 72hrs. Of course, they need to use that time to learn to catch and eat the rotifers.

If you are using a 5.5 gallon larvae tank, you might consider not filling it completely for the first few days so the rotifers you have will be denser with less water. As you beef up the rotifers you can add more water. Although you may already have thought of that or it may not be possible depending on how the larvae tank is set up.

Never thought about them being able to survive off the yolk sac, thanks. I'm leaning towrds draining out some of the water. I like to have AMPLE rotifers to feed on during the early stage. It worked with the Tomato complex very well and I can only imagine that a more concentrated source of food is imperative fno matter what the species.

Here's a few more random shot of the breeding room, and a quick plug for Marc. My fishies like his filtered water.

Some sump shots, not impressive here for sure. Just a gangload of bioballs in a rubbermaid tub. Eggcrate keeps the bioballs in place and their is a heater and a lifereef SVS3-24 skimmer to remove waste.
