Large Airpump Driver Skimmer

Can you see the little white fitting on the right side of the square body right up near the top? That is where the input is. Sorry it took me so long to reply, I didn't see your question

is this thing making the gunk you expected, last time I checked it wasn't

Still working great! Here are a few shots of some of the crud it pulls. We still need to put a wetneck on it though, the neck gets crud so thick it's like removing baby "pudding"

Here is the collection bucket with some nice skimmate...yum.

Love your skimmer! Check out pics of my skimmer build. I have since changed to Aquatic Eco medium pore stones, four 9" and four 6", but had a horrible time getting them through the 3" BHs. I had to attach them to long air hoses and fit one through the hole at a time. That ended up with some serious sphaghetti and at least one of the hoses blew off. Getting great skimmate! :D

What did you use for gaskets?

The gasket we used was a polyurethane gasket Tom had at the shop, not sure where it came from, but I had to custom cut it to shape/size and drill the holes out...it was a real PITA to make.

Just recently went external with this skimmer since I changed my sump. So far its been doing great, had some problems with leaking at first, had use some silcone and grue the heck out of the bolts and gasket area. It's going to be a real mess trying to clean it when that time comes again. I made sure I did a good cleaning before firing it back up.

Yeah? I switched from the flat rubber (Aquatic Eco) to the EDPM from HD. It works well but does flatten out over time. BTW, my pics are not really up-to-date in that I have all SS hex screws now and use a cordless drill to make quick work of them. Also on my site you can see my multi-media reactor which is working really well.

I also switched to an electronic float switch in the collection bucket which triggers the shut-down of the Alita 100 as well as sound an audible alarm. That has completely stopped my over-skimming floods. :D

I wish I had the skill/tools to route nice gasket troughs into my flanges.

So you don't have problems with the small cup compressing the foam head? I sort of feel like my collection cup could have been even bigger to allow more free-flow of the foam, but perhaps you get and like a dryer skimmate? I did cut the riser at a slant so that it would spill easier, like Weatherson did on his.

I woud say overall the performance has been pretty good, I'm sure that I could make some mods and get it going better, but before I would do anything like that I would probably make a needle wheel deltec/bubbleking knockoff.

I really am not convinced that a NW will perform better at exporting skimmate. I too was very jazzed up about the whole concept and have been following several related threads, but I still do not see a clear advantage to justify the extra electricity. My skimmer is gravity fed, CC, with just the Alita 100 pulling 120W. That is extremely energy efficient for skimming a 1,200g system.

My only concern is that as my reef grows, and the bio-load grows, my current skimmer may not be able to keep up. The short-term solution would be to skim wetter, but for the long term, I am looking at the NW concept as well. I have an extra Sequence 4200 and have played around with the impellors.

In fact I have created what I believe to be a true DIY modification to the existing Sequence impellar, but I haven't gotten it to work yet with the air volume I need. It does put out extremely small bubbles with low air flow, so I just need to figure it out (or get Sherman to).

I'll show it to you when you come over...Sherman said he would help me get it going as I am injecting the air at the wrong place. I just can't get to it until I finish the expansion on my store.
