Large amounts of nudi killed today!!!

So I just got a nice sized zoa rock from my lfs (200+ zoas) and Idid a fresh water dip. About 50 yes 50 nudi came off and I found and removed at least 40 egg strands.

My question is, how long does it take for the eggs to hatch? I know I did not get all of the eggs, so how long till I can do another DIP? The zoas are in a tank w/ no other zoas (my seahorse tank), so if I can catch the new baby nudi before they lay more eggs, I think I have them beat.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Aaron

No one knows for sure, but the best guesses are between 10 and 21 days. So do your dip weekly for about a month or so.... you might also consider adding Flat Worm Exit to the dip as that helps kill them as well.

You can also invest in a wrasse, like a yellow coris or something that 'usually' will hunt them like pods.

Dave,

I just read the article about wrasses and think I will add one. Do you know how they interact w/ mandarins? I have a blue mandarin that is thriving and I would hate to disrupt his world to much.

Thanks so much,
Aaron

Depends on the wrasse... I've heard of 6-lines having issues with Mandarins (or any pod eaters really) but a Yellow Coris should be fine with it. You will want to keep a close watch on it though since you have a 75G and thats a bit small for two primary pod eaters... I would recommend the Yellow since they typically will eat flake and other food as well as pods and such. The Green Coris have a good repuation as well.

Keep in mind that as those fish get bigger, they may end up picking on shrimp or hermits.

I will definatly keep this in mind.
Thanks for the quick replies, and now I just have to find a green coris wrasse.

Thanks,
Aaron

Welcome and let us know on that other thread how it works out for you. If you end up spotting some additional nudis in that colony watch the Coris carefully and see if its picking at them. I also have suspicions about Hermits and egg sacs... Since hermits pick on everything else it stands to reason they may end up eating eggs too.

One of the problems with adding a wrass or other preditor is that you may only be keeping the nudis in check rather than getting rid of them. Just my 2 cents.

I have a yellow coris and he constantly prowls the rockwork everyday. I have witnessed him eating a nudi and seen him throw a bristle worm against the glass. He is very peaceful with my other fish and when he isn't "hunting", he swims around alot with my orange shoulder tang. IMO a good choice.

That is why you dip AND get a hunter.... multi-prong approach. No other way to truly be sure you have rid yourself of them as they can lay eggs anywhere, not just on the zoos.

keep doing dips...add lugol's to the water, make sure your pH and temp are identical to your tank and continue to dip. you could dip a couple times a day as long as they are quick dips, as they should be.

camaroracer214,

I do add the lugol's to the FWD, but I have only done it once, I think I will try it at a more frequent rate.
swannL11,
I have not.

Thanks,
Aaron
