Large Angels and Gorgonians

I've been wanting a large angel for years now and I have a tank big enough now, the problem is I have lots of Gorgonians in the tank. Would a Large Angel (most likely an Emperor) decimate them. In assuming it would but it never hurts to ask.

It all depends on the individual fish. I have a Majestic and an Emperer in my mixed reef. Except for a small pick here and there they don't seem to bother any of the corals or Gorgonians. My wife does keep them well fed though.
I am sure you will get a lot of replies saying the opposite. But like I said, Every fish is different.

FWIW, I've also got a majestic and four other small angels (2 potters, a singapore, and a mulitbar) with five different kinds of gorg. The majestic definitely nips at my big purple sea whip and my purple sea feather. It doesn't seem to have damaged them at all, and he doesn't seem very interested in any of the others.

Emperors or other big angels may be a different ballgame, though.

Thanks for the info, from what I keep reading if you keep them very well fed you will have a better shot at them not nipping at things. Problem is work a week on and then a week off so I feed multiple times a day for a week then when I go back to work I only feed once or twice a day. So I'll have to see, I have another fowlr tank it can go in if it becomes a problem.

I would highly recommend an autofeeder. Since I started using one, I don't worry so much when I work late because my fish get several small mixed pellet feedings throughout the day.

Ditto! It relieves alot of stress knowing that your fish are fed regardless of your activities. I feed frozen additionally, but if I dont, they still eat! Full fish, less likely to pick IMO!

Didn't think of that I have auto feeder go off three times a day with dried coral food for my gorgonians sponges and NPS corals. I could easily throw another one right next to it for larger pellets.

Interesting - what is the coral food you're using? Have you noticed a difference? I'm beginning to really love gorgonians. Mine vary a lot in terms of the size of their feeder polyps and I don't really feed much that's probably usable to them. I occasionally feed cyclopeeze and Nutramar Ova, but I think those are too big for my sea feathers.

I'd love to see a picture of your tank. Also, where in Arkansas are you? I'm from Little Rock originally.

I use coral frenzy, and ocean nutrition coral food most of the time in there. About 10 minutes after the feeder goes off you can really see the polyps extention. I'm at work right now I'll try and get some decent pics of the tank soon.

I live in Conway and work in Little Rock at Childrens Hospital

I have a 400 gallon DT with 4 large angels and around 10 gorgonians. I have had no problems at all with the angels eating them.

We've got a 450g Caribbean biotope display at work with a few dozen gorgonians and a pair of Queen Angels. They seem to go long streaks without touching the gorgs only to be followed by a streak of causing major damage. They've never touched any of the 3 anemone species in there though. Keep in mind that Queens are some of the worst choices for a reef tank though, so your results may be a bit better if you're looking to keep something more like an Emperor, Asfur, Blueface, Regal, etc.
