Large Chalice Colonies

Picture is a few months old. It's now about 8" across.

This used to be two frags from the same mother colony.. they literally reached out to each other and covered all the other frags between them.
Here's what they used to look like

I am really liking the growth pattern. I see in the pictures that they don't necessarily have to have something to grow on. Now I don't have to worry about adding a shell or something for my frags to grow up and cover. I have been keeping mine low in the tank but may try to move them up to see if there is any increase in color or growth. Thanks again!

Sharing some of the devastation under a large chalice, & across a perimeter of its growth too. That edge is like an invisible knife- everything for 3" in the direction of growth will be dead...

I better keep that in mind for growth. At that size and growth pattern do you find yourself having to keep then trimmed back on a regular basis to keep from killing other corals?

Truthfully, I haven't trimmed it back because I'm fascinated by the size it has achieved. I'm also usually too late. By the time I see it attacking another coral, there's little that can be done.
My tank is generally overgrown at this point and I can't give frags fast enough... so no room to move pieces, so the most aggressive are winning.

Several child colonies have naturally broken off. I've put those next to my
Most noxious other corals like my hairy mushrooms... that was an epic battle...
The mushroom "won" through sheer damaging power but the chalice "escaped" by growing up faster and establishing higher ground. It basically left the lower part of the col By to fight and die while the higher plateau created new layers of growth far enough from the mushrooms.

My tank isn't manicured like most. It is a wild garden - but a healthy vibrant one with winners and losers and very fast growth.

I see you have a similar Xenia issue as i do. Do you let it just win/lose too? So far i've seen it lose in a match-up vs GSP but not much else.
Love your reef, would like to see more photos.

karimwassef - I thought those hairy mushrooms was GPS aka I made a mistake in my tank...lol. I cringe whenever I see it...lol. One of my first corals that I had success with...lol. A healthy tank is all that really matters! I am going to see if I can find some old pics of my 90 i use to have. I just let corals grow and they were happy. I had to move them into my old 180 which crashed
. Hopefully I will be getting back in the hobby soon with a new tank my temp setup is getting old...lol. Post a FTS if you could. I like seeing a thriving tank.
