Large mappa puffer died

i had a golden that done the same thing. was doing great. he was skinny when i got him. was workin on get him fat. then one day he just quit eating. and the next day....... dead. dont understand it.

The mappa was in a very established system 5 yrs old. Live rock great water movement lot of life in the also a uv sterlizer wierd

That's a shame. I'm sorry to hear it. Maybe he was just old? Does anyone know the life expectancy of these fish? And whatever it is I'm sure is shortened in an aquarium.

Yes puffers can release toxins when they die, if they arent removed asap. I had a 14in stars and stripes puffer die, that i had for about 6 years, and i bought him at about 5in. He just mysteriously stopped eating, became very sluggish, and about a day later when i was viewing my aquarium he spazzed out from laying on the substrate and a few minutes later died ... I doubt it was old age, but i dont know what the other causes may be ...
But since i got another S & S puffer and have had him now for a few years; (now at 7inches) ...

And i also had a relative that has a 240gal agressive system with an 8in golden. He had went away for 2 days. The night he left the housekeeper called and said it didnt look normal and was not moving from its "rest spot", he didnt think much of it - a day later he arrived home with a total tank wipeout ..... When all fish but the puffer looked normal and ate/swam fine !!

I know that the 2 top killers of puffer are internal "worms", and the extensive use of copper medications on a tank containing a puffer :[

Can you try to proactively get rid of the worms upon arrival so that this does not happen. I guess not all will have worms but will something be helpful in the case that it may? Also is the use of copper not recommended due to the smooth skinned nature of the puffer and their inability to have the same resistance to chemicals?

Thanks in Advance

You can treat them for worms with praziquantel. It won't cause any damage if it doesn't have worms. So Imo I would treat all puffers in QT with it.

Sorry to hear about your loss....I recently lossed my Golden Puffer for no apparent reason. He was fine one day and dead the next....
