Laundry detergent is a dangerous chemical you don't want getting in your tank. Was it Liquid or powder? As the liquid leaves residue that will kill your tank and I'm not sure about the powder.
Reason i know this was by washing filter socks in our HE front loader and at the time i was killing all my fish for no apparent reason. And i wasn't using any soap just rinsing in the machine, That's how after i stopped no more fish died
and Chris @ AC agreed that was the problem.
Even after rinsing them out i would be afraid of residue being left behind and doing harm. The best bet is to get a food grade drum that has not had chemicals in it. But there your fish so that's your call. JMO

Dickson Coop used to sell 40g+ orange plastic barrels (mason jar type 2 section lids), which were food grade (had olives in them), they were cheap, we bought over 20...we used them for gravity feeders (deer feeders in KY). Might be worth a call out there.

Actually Mel has some CoOp by his shop that sells food grade 55gal ones with lids for 20.00 and you don't have to worry about stuff dying.

I am the GM at a large laundry in the Memphis area. I dispose the drums on a regular basis. I often look at them and think about it but I have not found a way to get rid of the residue? i dump around 8 a month back to the manufactering company.
