Large tank owners I need advice

Ok I am setting up a 180 in wall and I need a pump that comsumes the least amount of energy but that will also produce as much flow as possible @ 20' give or take head height. I will be keeping mainly lps and softies and some sps. I would like to get around 2400goh @ the tank. Keep in mind that the sump will be down stairs in the basement therfore I need a strong pump. Thank you for you help

A Pressure rated pump is what you are looking for. External I think is the only option at those sizes, and just as well because of the heat/size. I've had great luck w/ Iwaki's, personally, and Blue-Line's are made by the same designer, so lots of folks are having similar experiences w/ those. The larger pumps are a different animal alltogether. I think once you get past 1" connectors, it's a different ballgame. There are several brands that are reviewed well by end users here on RC.. Sequence is one name that comes to mind, I can share some personal experience on - our zoo's tank has been running them for about 2-3 years now w/o a lick of maintenenace.

MY SUMP IS ALSO IN THE BASEMENT W/ ABOUT 18' HEAD PRESSURE....I USE A SUBMERSIBLE (yes, SUBMERSIBLE ! ) POND PUMP..."POND mASTER"...it is rated 4000 gph but i actually get about 2800 per hour w/ that head pressure....why would you want to use an inline pump that you would have to oil all the time, plus the salt creep, and when something goes wrong, it's a mess, plus you have to drill your sump.......w/ the submersible, it's plug and play ! as for heat issue....i'm running a constant 79.9 degree temp.......the pump runs about $400 new........i'll try to find a web site for you....pm if you would like to see pics !

maybe you could dedicate a pump for the basement return and have a pump located at the tank level for circulation?

First of all, very few external pumps need oiling, in fact I know if none. If plumbed correctly, there is no salt creep. External pumps transfer very little heat into the water and can be maintained without getting your hands wet. You can get direct drive external pumps that are way more efficient that mag drive pumps. The biggest reason IMO to go external is that when something goes wrong with the pump, it cannot electrocute you nor can it leech tar and copper into your system.

Steveo,

Since you have 20' head, consider reducing your flow to around 5 times tank volume (900gph) and getting flow in your tank using a CLS or some Tunze streams.

Well, mm949 and schwaggs I did account for having some seios in the tank. I wanted to get 2 2600's to start. But I still wanted optimal flow from the return pump as well .

ReeferMac- i was thinking of using that pump, that was my main choice. However I was affraid of over running it because according to the manufactuer the pump can only handle 23' of head pressure which only leaves me three feet of play.

I have nearly the same situation and use a Sequence SEQ5000. I feel it is probably a little too much flow through my sump and would get a smaller pump if I where to replace is. Possibly the 4200, but I am nearly certain it would be a sequence of some sort.

agree with schwaggs 2400 through a sump is verry high IMOP closed looop for the flow in the tank

I also agree. Unless your pushing that much water through your skimmer, your really wasting energy and creating microbubble issues.

I just ordered a Sequence Manta Ray on Friday and should have it on Thursday this week. $339 from Marine Depot. It is a pressure rated pump so I can also use it to run my beckett skimmer and get rid of the stand alone pump I am using now for the skimmer.

It seemed like one hell of a pump for the price.
