Large Tank Questions

I currently keep freshwater fish, but I am looking for help here because I know you guys/gals keep big tanks. I'm looking to upgrade from my 6 foot 180g to a 9 foot tank. The specs would be 9 foot long x 26" high x 30" wide. This will be a custom tank.

I need help. I want to go 2-3 tower overflows so I guess this would look more like a reef-ready tank. If I go with 3 what do I have to worry about sump wise? I figure the 3 intakes would dump into the sump via tubing or hard pvc and all I would have to figure out is how many drilled returns I would want in the tank.

I want lots of good flow back into the tank so I am thinking 3 drilled returns about 3" to 4" below the water line. Would this mean me getting 3 submersible pumps in my sump to pump the water out of my sump back into my tank? I don't understand how this works. Or does this mean me getting a larger workhorse pump and having some type of 3-way valve to split off the returning tank water?

I need to send a drawing to some tank manufacturers showing them what I want so I have to get a better understanding of how all this works.

Presently I am running 2 2217 Eheim cannister filters on my tank. I want to put everything below the tank now. I worry about water spillage so any thoughts how best to safeguard this with one-way valves and pumps would help me make my decision.

I want to go glass on this big boy tank. While cleaning my present glass tank, there are many times my sand makes contact on the sides of the glass. I don't want to worry about what this would do to an expensive acrylic tank.

Help me out pls with info.

Hi Ron. You will get more feedback in the "New to the hobby forum". I have asked questions several times in this forum and received very little or no response at all. I wish I could answer your questions but I'm horrible with the technical stuff. Good luck with your new tank.

With a tank that big you will want a large external pump since 3 submersible pumps will add lots of heat and more potential for electrical problems. The returns should be pvc with unions so you can open them up if you get something stuck in them. You actually have lots of options maybe you should have a talk with your local reef club or someone in the area that cleans tanks.
