Large tank recommended salt?

I have been using Instant Ocean salt mix since entering the hobby. Are there any "large" tank owners out there who can compare the benefits of Instant Ocean against Reef Crystals?

What are your water test results just using Reef Crystals?

Supplementing to maintain CA, MG and ALK wasn't much of a challenge with smaller tanks, but it is getting quite a chore as the gallonage goes up...

What are others doing?

I just switched from IO to RC for the 450 I'm setting up. It's still cycling though and I haven't bothered testing the calcium yet. I'm still stuck on ammonia, nitrItes, and nitrAtes.

I CAN tell you though that the RC disolves a lot slower than the IO. Give it a solid 24 hours with really good circulation before using it.

I haven't really tested any of this, but its called Pro reef salt for a reason im guessing. But ive heard Tropic Marine Pro reef salt has no traceable elements of phosphates.

Great tip... check back after you make your first readings for CA, ALK and MG. Thanks.

Do any of the major brands have traceable elements of phosphates?

That would be a surprise...

I've been using Red Sea Coral Pro for the past 2 years, and seeing good growth.. It's not that much more $$ But definatly less expensive then TMPro..

Just my $0.02

All I can say is with the salt I am using it will help keep your parameters more steady. I do weekly water changes on my 300 of 25 gallons.

There are several people in the club I belong to using it and they have never seen better results. One person has a heavily stocked SPS tank. He has been real happy with the results.

I switched over to Red Sea Coral Pro as well. Is your tank heavily stocked? What are your CA readings?

It is moderately stocked with SPS and fish - see photo. I run CA 420-440, ALK 4.2 Meq/L and MG 1300-1350. To keep CA at that level, I dose Kalkwasser with my ATO and supplement with Kent Liquid Calcium.

I'll look into Red Sea Coral Pro... thanks for the suggestions.

Bottom line is that it does not matter. IO seems to be cheaper in larger quantities and has been used by more people for the longest with good results. No magic bullets. In a large tank, you'll have to supplement with either a Ca reactor, Mg, kalk reactor, or all of the above regardless. Water changes will also have to be done regardless. Try getting a palate of IO and split it with some local people. You'll be amazed how much money you'll save. By the way, no. I don't work for or sale IO.

Hi, I totaly confirmed, the only best quality, with constant parameters.

No 1 in the world

I use Tropic Marine Pro Reef as well on my big tank and even though it is expensive I have no complaints and my SPS seem happy. I've never had a problem with this salt in almost 2 years of using it on a couple different tanks and it always dissolves very quickly.

Just my .02.

I use to use Red Sea Coral Pro(had to supplement WAY TOO much for ALK), but now I use a mixture of Kent, RSCP, and Oceanic. 3:1:1
