Do all you large tank owners have access to your tanks from the back? If the overflow is on one end and you can reach everything from the front do you need the back open?
The wall behind my 220 has a 1 square foot hole cut into it so I can access my overflow plumbing and the. The plumbing actually comes through where my sump is in the other rolm For easier access.
I have my tank pulled away from the wall 16" The cabinet is currently being built with an opening/door that I can open and get behind the tank. I also have a hole in the wall that is behind the tank. This room that the tank abuts is the downstairs bathroom. There are doors in the bathroom that I can open to access the back of the tank. I wanted to make sure that I could get behind the tank for plumbing issues and also pump problems. I have external overflows so getting to the plumbing was especially important.
My tank is going in the corner of my dining room I will leave 6 inches or so on the side but the back of the tank will be about 3 inches from the wall. Sump I going into a fish room in the basement. I don't see a need to have the back open.
I ran a 300g tank against a wall for years no issues and a basement sumproom. The more access you have the better for sure. Many times I wish I had more access but it was ok but far from great.
I had a 300 I had 18" from the wall just so I could walk behind it. I was glad I did because IMO you will want to get back there for maintenance or cleaning sooner or later.
My 220g sits about 8.5-9" away from the wall, with the overflow in the center with no great way to access the overflow especially since the bottom of my stands it's at 48" the only reason I have 9" of clearance against the wall is because of my 2" PVC plumbing coming out of the back to feed the closed loop
I am considering a 130" x 30 or 36" x 27" with an overflow at one end or overflows on both ends against a wall with a fish room thru the wall to the side of the tank. The 30" wide might be better to reach the back of the tank from the front, not sure how much I would need to access the back of the tank with overflows on the ends.
