Last MH pics maybe? Going to LEDS

Well my new Grandson stayed asleep a lil longer than i thought he would so I got some quick shots. The tank actually looks a lot better than it dows in these phots. You loose so much intensity with pictures. I will try to get some better images this weekend. Hre are some of the same corals that I shot at first to compare. All the new growth on all the corals looks great so It will only get better.

jroovers be sure to take lots of before/now/after (well too late for before LOL) pics and some detailed "macro" shots so you can document growth and colors.

When I converted my current tank over to LED I wish I had done a better job of documenting it. After several months I thought "I should have taken pics 1x from the same angle and same spot so I can "SEE" the progression."

Oh well hind-sight is always 20/20 LOL
Looking back at this I can see some real changes. I like the new look for the most part. Some parts of the tank look much better. Also I have a complete build thread on this forum that has been going 5 years if anyone wishes to see before pics of the big stag and the Emperator before she changed and grew up.

Many thanks for posting the photos. Coral colours look very good. Be nice to see what happens in another 3 months time.

It is. Its the Steve Tyree Soli. Same piece as growing about half way up in the left side pic. The soli that is half way down hasnt shown as much color as the one at the top. The top pice is about 7 inches from the LED fixture. There was almost no transition period on the lights and this pieces never showed and any distress. I have a frag of it growing deep that has colored up as well. I think its a combination of environmental factors affecting the color, not just the light. In that last 6 months or so I have dropped calcum in this tank from 500 plus to around 440. I have also started adding oystr eggs after the lights go out. I think a lot of the coral changes in shape and color are due to these changes rather than the new lights.
The high calcium ranged from 500 to 540 and was a mistake. It has caused a lot of problems for a long time. Even old guys get it wrong occationally. I figured out what i was doing wrong about 6 months ago. My suppliment ratio was way off. I was adding way too much calcium chloride. The tank is much better now that I have fixed that.

Not to HIJACK this thread but for those "nae-sayers" over LED check out this "long-term" success thread

I have a feeling with the new batch of Full Spectrum (multi-channel/color units) hitting tanks this month you're going to see more and more of these long-term success stories popping up all over.

Thanks for sharing DbD :)

You can tell that those colors are blown out and the tank is full of brownish purple corals except for the green corals.

What do you think "blown out" means ?

I was referring to the colors of the corals in the pics linked. I think your tank has gorgeous growth, but the overall colors appear to be subdued... even when you had the halides. That could be the pics or something.

Honestly all the improvements are due to chemistry. I just stoped over dosing calcium about 6 months ago and the colors and shape were improving allready before i made the switch to LEDS

.

SHHHHH, dont be modest it was obviously the LEDs!! jk. either way, steps in the right direction. Cant wait to see this beast color up

getting your temp down helps too, I'm sure.

Yes Absolutely. Maybe not so much dropping it but the fluxuation of from 77 to 84 wasnt good for sure. Within a month after putting on the LEDs a persistent slight infection of Ich cleared up as well. Several of the fish were showing a few spots since I added the regal last December. Two to three weeks after adding the LEDs the Ich was gone. Only change I can see that might affect that was the temp swing and the lower average temp after the LEDs. It could be just coinsedental but seemed to be related. I know the fish like it more at the lower temps. Much more active later in the day and just brightere and more energetic all around.
