Lateral bracing for stand.

Hi,

I am building my stand, and I would like to know what would be stronger for lateral bracing.

2x4 diagonal bracing between vertical posts

vs.

3/8 inch plywood across the whole face?

The span 36" wide and 30" High.

Thank You,
E

Dont worry about that, 2x4 construction is PLENTY for a tank that size.. I made a stand for my 40B using the diagram below and threw a 29G sump in there.. , then skin it however you want..

use this for a resference, with only 36" across you dont really NEED a center brace, but i put mine there for the sump light to hang from.

This is what I am thinking.

Do you think in needs further support. I will have a 150G cube on it.

Thanks,
E

Skinning it will provide all the bracing you need. Take a look at most commercial stands - they're built with 1x timber but their strength comes from being skinned with panel material of some sort.

it absolutely does need some bracing for stability, disregard the post by tidus. plywood would be best but a single board could work if done properly.

For a stand that size you could even use 1/4 inch if you wanted to. Whatever you choose, use an adhesive like liquid nails around the edge of the plywood.

if everything fits together snugly then wood glue would be great. if its a sloppier fit, construction adhesive will fill slight gaps and still be strong enough. I would glue it and use a bunch of screws as well, mostly because I love using my power drill.

That made me laugh, as I can relate to that issue.
