latex gloves

Ever since starting this hobby, I've been looking for a good glove to wear when messing around in the reef. THe ones the fish stores sell either were too flimsy and didn't last longer than one use, or were too heavy and big and I didn't have the dexterity I needed. Finally, I have found a nice glove at LeeValley.com. They call them mucking gloves. The item number is BL650 and they are only $6. They are just what I wanted, are comfortable, easy to get on and off, not too thick, not too thin. Lee Valley is a Canadian company that has lots of garden and wood working tools, so you'll probably find something else you want while you are there. Only drawback is the red color--the fish definitely make themselves scarce when I put my hands in!

Hey that sounds great. I was just thinking the other night after having my hands in the SW tank...that I needed something to wear over my hand and arm...they itch really bad afterwards, then it turns to a actual hurt.
do you or anyones else have this problem? or do you wear gloves for another reason?

Yes, I do. It's become much worse over the years too. I had to see the doctor a couple of years ago when the rash on my arms became unbearable.

It's very good practice to wear gloves to protect both yourself and our inhabitants. A practice that I haven't got into yet. Perhaps I'll pick up a set of them.

what about maybe using those plastic gloves that they use to check out the inside of the backside of cows and horses. it seems that they are very thin and would be good for dexterity

How far do the gloves go up your arm?
I have the Coralife gloves (blue and orange) but they leak around the seam between the glove and the part that covers your arms.

Total length of the glove is 23". On my arm, that is almost to my armpit. I don't have major problems with putting my hands in the water, like Rob does. Mostly I have trouble only if I have a cut or handle ricordia and zooanthids. So I do stick my hands in unprotected for quick fixes of this or that, but for any time in the water, or if my hands recently handled cosmetics, for example, which might contaminate the tank, I use the gloves.

I was thinking about using the cow gloves, but I think some of them come lubricated....not sure... I guess you would just have to make sure they were non lubricated..

Wynne, I could see an advantage to the red color. I have triggers and puffers, always have to be aware of where my hands are so I don't get bitten. Sue
