I am setting up a fish only for a friend. He is new to saltwater. I wanted to make tank maintenance easy for him. The sump I gave him has a chamber above the bioballs to hold filter media. It has a nice tray that pulls out to change out the filter floss. This tray is big enough to use a carbon pad and/or a phosphate pad.

So the idea would be to get him to change out the filter floss and the carbon pad monthly. I know there are better methods for using carbon, but is this an ok way to go for him??

That should be fine - a lot of people don't even use carbon. Any plans for nutrient export? (refugium, water changes, etc)

He's done freshwater for 1+ years. From what I see those have been immaculate. I'm giving him a few 5 gallon jugs to mix and change water in. So for now Ill see how he does with that. Ill stop by and spot check for nitrates from time to time.
