Learning/rebuilding from my epic fail

Hi Matt,

Has Reefvet actually tested this product in his lab?

Are you getting any cyano with NP Pro?

Thanks

Bulent

hey Bulent, I have no Cyano whatsoever..
I haven't had any since my last chemiclean treatment sometime around Christmas.
I have been using the np pro for almost a month with no signs of cyano at all.

Reefvet encouraged me to to give it a try a couple of times on Matt's thread..
He seems to quite like the aquaforest line and seems to be very positive about the np pro..
I don't remember for sure but I seem to recall that he is quite familiar with the line of products and has actually been testing them for a while..
Unfortunately, it's difficult to ask him directly as he is a bit of a ghost! He appears mysteriously and then is gone just as quick! :)

I hear if you look in a mirror and say "ORP" three times he appears:spin1:

So Matt do you think it was the chemiclean that finally took down the cyano or a combination of that, -NP Pro, and getting your N and P in balance, etc.? I'm considering going the chemical as well I have a solid outbreak in one of my tanks.

Nice thread Matt. Always following the discussions on the 2 Matt's threads......... like a gost. . Lol

Best

You guys are funny! Reading this on my way to work really helps my commute.
AF has been getting a lot of attention lately, even at my LFS it seems to come up every time I go and more people seem to be trying it. makes me wonder but honestly I'm too lazy & comfortable to go a different route at this point in time . I love your break down of nutrients and different ways of getting the job done. So many ways of getting to your goals and so many new products out there now it's amazing . Sometimes I feel like I've been missing from the hobby and it's becoming more like technology advancing every second. I recently started to checking nitrates again , thanks to the owner of my LFS he will text me his results and I would text him back mine.....late night testing that is lol.

I don't think that Aquaforest is necessarily doing anything totally unique or new, the difference is that they are a small Polish company that puts a lot toward making really high quality products at a reasonable, even inexpensive price point. They offer multiple paths toward achieving each goal, whether it be calcium and Alk management, coral foods, nutrient management, etc. The tanks that have run their system have fantastic results. All together, it made me want to give it a shot and I'm glad I did:dance:

Hey Tim.. I went back to look at exactly what I did to combat the cyano for the last time..
Here it is:

This was about two months ago. I only started the np pro a few weeks ago..
I used that treatment as a reset and stopped dosing most things..
Between then and now, I watched n go lower and lower.. P was ok because I was using Phosbond but when I stopped that in anticipation of beginning np pro, and dosing n, it jumped back up to .16-.19..
I just increased my np pro to 12 drops a day.. I have brought n up well with cano3 and kno3 additions but even at 10 drops of np pro, p is stubbornly sitting at .17 currently..
I'll give this nitrate and np pro treatment a few more weeks to see if p budges, if it doesn't, I may just go back to stopping n additions (or reducing dramatically) and add the Phosbond again..
Even though the bryopsis and bubble algea are a pain, the tank was looking really good (better than now) when I had just finished the last cyano treatment.
So far I think my best health has been while I was dosing a small amount of n to keep it at around 3-5ppm and using Phosbond to keep p around .07...
I want p lower but the tank was doing very nicely at those numbers...

Hi Matt,

thanks for the comment in my thread. I ranted a bit but still appreciate people thinking about it!

I have thick green cyano on the sandbed and some rocks, I tackle that if/when everything else settles down.

I've never had green cyano- Always red/brown for me. I wonder if the color is significant and/or related to your issues.

I got some small complimentary bottles of it in my salt buckets and Reefvet has been saying how effective it is, so I figured I'd give it a try...
If I didn't have it, I'd probably go back to my vsv.. But now that I am using it, I'll stick with it for now..
Sorry if I missed it, what ratio were you using for vsv? I currently only dose sugar but am thinking of trying vsv.

Thanks Matt! I'm going to try hard to control mine without going chemical but it has a stronghold and I may need it as a last resort. What made you switch to the Blue Life? I didn't see any product info looking it up I wonder if it is Erythromycin. I'm hoping a heavy dose of Seachem Matrix with AF Bacteria will do the trick over the long run. May get into some Phosphate removal media as well.

It's quite amazing when I think back to the 90s.. I remember when the plenum method became popular. The first time I added a remote plenum to my system and the hair algea simply vanished from my tank over a period of a couple months.. It was like magic. That was when I had coil and core tar ballasts running my bell shaped metal halide lights with venture 65k bulbs. They would buzz and hum as they turned on... Things have come a ways since then, that's for sure!!
orp orp orp, REDRUM..... AH!

honney, dont go in the bathroom
Ha! I wonder if I said reefvet 3 times, he would smash through the door with an ax and, with a psychotic grin, say 'heeeeeeere's reefvet!!!'

Hey Mark, like i said, you are entirely entitled to your rant! I have never had green cyano either.. But keep in mind, cyano in general is a nutrient hog, it will significantly impact your n and p readings..

Sorry if I missed it, what ratio were you using for vsv? I currently only dose sugar but am thinking of trying vsv.
Hey Kurt, I'm sorry, I looked through the first 12 or so pages of my thread looking for my recipe and I looked in my iPhone notes but I guess I erased it.. I just don't have the recipe anymore.. If I remember correctly, the largest ingredient was 6% acetic acid vinegar, I think less than a third vodka and then only a few drops of honey as sugar.. Sorry about that. It's been a while since I dosed vsv..
Thanks Matt! I'm going to try hard to control mine without going chemical but it has a stronghold and I may need it as a last resort. What made you switch to the Blue Life? No problem Tim. As I mentioned to Mark, cyano is a nutrient hog.. It will pull a lot of nutrients out of the water column very quickly, making you think your nutrient production is lower than it really is. It may also outcompete the bacteria that will try to colonize your matrix..
I think your plan is a good one. Beef up your nutrient reduction methods and reduce phosphates.. You could also try AF coral B... It's supposed to help suppress the growth of cyano... 'Supposed' being the operative word here... Not unlike KZ's coral snow..
Ultimately, I don't think you should be all that scared to use the chemical.. The 3 times I used it, the corals really didn't notice..
I tried 3 different brands (not sure the active ingredient is actually any different) just to keep the effects fresh, in case the active ingredients are different. One product said to remove Carbon and another said to leave it in... I think it's important to leave the product in the system long enough to really be effective..
Good luck with it..
Keep in mind that it takes a good 90 days for matrix to become fully colonized with beneficial bacteria.

hey buddy whats your alk right now and what do you aim for?

Hey March, a couple days ago, my alk hit a high of 8. Since Carbon dosing and adding nitrate, the corals must have slowed growth slightly and that pushed my alk up a bit.. I shoot for around 7..
I turned my co2 down slightly to allow my alk to drop a bit..
