Least Agressive Acanthurus Tang

I had a convict that was real skinny when I got him, after fattening him up in QT he just died one day just before I was to introduce him, ... odd?

He was very timid. I do want to try another sometime.

I also have a tenneti that I got at bearly 2" it's now nearing 5 and a great fish! Very mellow. Recently he accepted a new very small yellow and they are allways together now.

Don't have a orange shoulder, but one is also on my list for its personality. Every one I know with one loves them!

I am shock no one has mentioned the blue hippo (regal) as being the most passive. So many people buy this guy and think along those lines and I would have agreed until my 2 inch grew to 6-7 inches and tried to kill a 8-9 inch french angel that he had been living with for 2 years. He just went crazy. Just want to give a warning to others reading this thread. I have read others stating this too, about tangs reaching a certain size and just becoming a terror.

Blue hippo isn't an Acanthurus tang. ;)

I think that the convict tang is probably the least aggressive out of their genus. You rarely hear of convict tangs terrorizing tanks.

I can tell you it is not the Sailfin or the Blue hippo. Hippos tend to get meaner as they get bigger. I have a Sailfin that gives my purple and powder blue (all are the same size) a run for their money. I did have a naso in with them and she did not bother anything.

I don't think you have to worry about conflicts between Acanthuras and Naso. Other than some Acan's are just plain nasty to everything, they mostly ignore Nasos.

Your answer probably depends a lot on the tank size. If you are considering Nasos, then I assume you have a very large tank and you can probably get away with even the most aggressive species because the space calms everything down.

How about a lavender tang? They are pretty docile and don't grow huge like many of the others.

Imo, it all depends on the individual fish... for the most part, Convicts and orange shoulder tangs tend to be the most passive.
