LED 32 Biocube Chamber 1 skimmer options?

My biocube 32 is set like this.

Chamber 1: Partial marine pure plates and my 50w heater

Chamber 2: Tabs cut out for the Intank media rack for the 32 and a Tunze 9001. The skimmer seems to be working well. I have to turn it off though if I stick my arm in the tank to adjust anything.

Chamber 3: Return pump with inline Coralife UV light.

I have been hearing that the tunze 9001 is the biggest pain to get dialed and never really produces nice dark skim. Has this been your experience as well?

I just scrapped my 9001, really got sick of dealing with the temperamental thing. I had a coralife sitting around and decided to just go with that in chamber 1. So far it is working as well as the much more expensive 9001 did. (Light green skimmate). I know a lot of people don't like having to buy the replacement wood things but you can find cheaper alternatives that work just as well as the coralife ones.

If you are looking for a nano skimmer that is going to produce a dark skimmate, I don't thing you will have much luck.

Is the 32 different then the 29? It looks the same to me from those pics.

Not sure why the AL115 wouldn't fit. You do have to mod the AL115 a bit to make it fit.

Google reefthuz on youtube, follow his mod and it should fit, just don't follow any of his other guidelines as they are all junk.

IMO the AL115 is the goto skimmer for a biocube. it's heads and tails better then the corallife biocube skimmer.

I think the AL115 hasn't been fitting in 32g biocubes, but it's more that the rear of the hood is too short now, apparently on the 29g it used to be up higher? Something like that, which means you can't have the cup high enough to be out of the water. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

But yes, everything else you said 100% :)

You bring up a good point, the 32 hood is not as tall as the 29 so the AL115 doesn't do well in chamber 1....

I looked at the magnet mod and decided to order one today....I also looked at the airline tube mod which might allow us to put the skimmer a bit lower in the water. I'll report back when i try it out

The lid on the 29 tapers down toward the rear corners. It's now lower over chamber 1 and 3.

The problem is in chamber 1 the water level is static and you can't lower it, so the skimmer can't be height adjusted to an ideal height if it needs to go higher.

I suppose your could cut down the retaining wall between 1 and 2, but have not seen that mod done in a 32.

I considered lowering the baffle between 1&2 but even still you would have to lower the water level in the main display to gain the room for the skimmer in chamber 1.

May be a stupid question as Im new to the skimming world, but any reason not to run the skimmer in chamber 3? Debating on what to do about a skimmer as its the next needed upgrade. Just so hard to buy a skimmer because......FRAGS! Lol

Ideally the skimmer goes first not last.

To give an example as to why, let's say you put some carbon in chamber 2 to capture waste.

Would you like dirty water that will quickly use that carbon up or cleaner water to make it last. If using the carbon up fast put the skimmer behind to clean up what's left. If to make it last longer put the skimmer first, to get most of the nutrients before other filters have to deal with it.

I'm all for buying more and more frags, but if you want to keep and grow your frags, not to mention see them through the algae forests, you might want to skip a few frags and buy a skimmer ;)

Yeah, Im thinking of trying one of the coralife ones. Not really wanting to go intank rack if I dont have to.

Results pending but it's looking pretty good... skimmers in with lid completely closed. Just got it setup and making good bubbles. Don't have a valve for the end of airline so I just knotted it. Height control is sketchy at best for now.

I am running my skimmer in chamber 3 and have had excellent results. I raised it about a 1/2 inch above what the recommend and that seemed to due the trick.

Sooo.....I was able to install the AL115 into chamber one today. I did the sure grip magnet mod and the airline tubing mod.
Basically, installed high then closed the hood to push it down. the water comes up a bit higher than normal...about half way up the venturi chamber. its been cleaned so after the break in, ill report back to let you know what type of skim im pulling out.

Ill add a pic if tapitalk behaves

Hows your experiment going?

So far ive found that yes, it works. But I only have minimal control over skim height and after 2 weeks im still having a hard time getting it dialed in. With the Flow control knob wide open and the airline valve nearly completely closed im still emptying a full skimmer cup daily.

I will say that what im pulling out has a light green color to it and the cup def has some buildup in it. Im still hoping that over time maybe it will break in some more and give me the ability to pull a drier skim.

If this is as good as it gets I can live with it though.

i went back to chamber 2 with ato and gave up on it...my goal was to empty the cup weekly and the whole daily thing didn't pull out anything of value...sorry, it wasn't for lack of trying

Hate to hear that. Are you running your reactor in 3 then?
