Led Frags to Colonies Pic Thread

I would post an image, but it would look like a thousand other frag to colony comparisons you have seen. Nothing new or innovative. I did not know there was a difference growing SPS whether its VHO, PC, T5, MH or LEDs.

Tony, just post your pics so we can all drool on ourselves please... :)

Tom, can I ask what that piece sold for?

I broke it up int 3 PCS' I kept one pc and the other two I think about 150-200 or so. I am known in the area as the cheap frag guy. PPl come over and leave with lots of coral for a fraction of the cost. Mainly because the frags are a result of routine maintenance and I am a big fan of aquaculture and educating ppl locally on SPS and dipping corals etc. The big colony I am holding in the first picture was 1 of 2 and had another one 2/3rds of the size which was sold off also. Long live TDB's Mt Dew Acro!

I was at the Last swap, Lansing, The big one annually for Michiganders and saw much of my old tank there distributed among various vendors.

I don't really have close up pictures but I'll play. On a 1 year time laps

Sorry for the cheap ipad photos.

Tom- what colour diodes did you have and what settings/ timings for each channel?.
I think you had almost wall to wall led panels?"¦.

Great Growth shots!

Thanks, I wish I took more progression shots. The lights had analog dials, I ran whites at 50% and the blues at 100%. 8 hours on whites and 12 hours on blues. I often had the blues on longer as I use to stay up late when I worked from home so the blues could have been on at times for 16 hours or more. Yeah wall to wall coverage.

Here is a few pictures I found of my sps under d120 evergreen units.

August 2014

Feb 2015:

Red dragon ia about 3 times the size and the garf bonsai is about 5 larger. I have been running d120 for over 2 years.

I'll play everything started as +/- 1" frags. The first 6 months was kind of rough. I had red bugs, a nippy fish, bad algae, a destructive hitch hiker crab and had to figure our my lights. The last 6 months things have been going well.

Not a frags to colony pic, but this was my tank during the year I tried LED. 6 AISol Blue units. They grew stuff fine, just slightly less color than my Radiums, so I went back to MH after a year. But don't think LED can't grow and color SPS, they do it pretty ok
My growth was mostly consistent with MH, just not as happy with the colors.

Mostly Under LED

This tank has been lit with a pair of RB Photon32 units. I has been supplementing with a pair of 150 watt HQI lights (4 hours per day) until last Fall when I replaced them with Kessil spots.

Initially I planned this tank to be fish first, coral second; and didn't really intend to be so SPS-centric. But it went the way it went. Some colonies simply got crowded out and had to be either significantly pruned or removed. Most recent picture is taken with a better camera.

Nice tanks yall!
Those of you with the evergrow units or the like...do you use optics? I ran a diy build (no optics) for a long time (4 years) but salt has taken its toll and I am thinking of replacing with Evergrow units or something similar. I am contemplating taking out the optics to semi match my old setup though. You cant build leds for what you can buy them for now...

I'm running the ReefBreeders version of the Evergrow fixture and I have it as supplied from RB with 90 optics on all diodes except the reds and moonlight which use 120.

Awesome to see this progression. Good work!

Cannot believe the growth you got, amazing! can I ask how many lights you had over a given area, how high they were mounted and did you have the optics on or off.
I have an evergrow IT2060 proreef would love to try and emulate your settings and get the results you have.
apologise to op if slightly off topic.
many thanks in advance.
