Led Lighting For Tall Tank

I've been looking at the 24" orphek led light http://www.marinedepot.com/24_Inch_Orphek_Power_Reef_PR156_LED_Light_Fixture_24_Inch_LED_Light_Fixtures-Orphek-UG1111-FILTFILDTF-vi.html to use on one side of my 46" tall tank and was wondering if anyone here can tell me if this would work. I wont have any corals but I am trying to get light all the way to the bottom. I built a rockwall from the top to the bottom so the tank is only about 20" wide where the light will go.

I have absolutely no experience with led lighting so hopefully someone can help me decide if this light will work. The light comes in a 90 degree lense fixture or 120 degree lense fixture. I'm guessing the light would be spread out a little more with the 120 degree fixture. If you have experience with led lighting I'm open for suggestions on other fixtures.

Thanks

The only LED that I have heard of for this deep a tank is Pacific Sun (which I am changing to on my 30 inch deep tank). I have AI on my 24 inch deep tank but that would not be usable for your situation.

Looking at that fixture, you would need 3 of them to light the tank. If its fish only, you might be able to get away with them. In my opinion, any LED will have trouble getting any kind of decent par numbers that deep but from an aesthetics point of view, it might not look bad. I dont think there are many if any people that are running deep tanks like yours with LED's. If your house is single story, a great option would be solar tubes which are essentially skylights that utilize a large diameter tube to focus the light down to a target. There are a number of members on the forum who have gone that route with great success.

Thanks for the input. Thats a good idea on the solar tubes. I remember seeing somebody using them in the Large Reef Tank forum. I was going to use MH but I dont want the power bill that goes along with that. I'm wondering if a combination of led and solar tubes would work... something to think about.

I am sure that would be a good option..

You said you won't have any corals, so any LED will work. You don't have to worry about PAR if youre going fish only tank. The light still get's down there and will appear bright to the eye if you use any descent LED.

This is what I'm not sure of, will the light make it to the bottom with any led light or will it peter out and look weak. Thanks.

For FOWLR, I think most LED will give a pleasing look. The value of LED is that you can mix the color you want and make things look like you want them to. But, if you were going to try corals, LED with optics will let you do what you want to do.

Try these lights. I was thinging about using them on my tank. I have a 110 g tall tank. 48'' x 18'' 31'' tall. I was told they would work from Neptune Aquatics. Ive been looking for about two months. I hope this helps.

Thanks. I'll check them out but right now I'm leaning towards the Orphek fixture.

I've been doing a ton of internet research for a good quality LED light and I was finally convinced after correspondences with the owner as well the Canadian distributer that Orphek is the best LED available. I know everyone on this site seems to like the AI fixtures and I don't want to ruffle any feathers but this is a quote from Mr.Wilson when discussing LED's
the rest are only 7000k, so they need a heavy blue to drown out the yellow. That yellow light is what burns corals and grows nuisance algae. The Orphek white led chip is 16000k before the blue is even added. This way you don't need as many blue LEDs and lumens can be increased with more whites. It also gives a higher CRI which makes it look closer to natural light
.
I had the option of any light on the market regardless of cost for the recent 1350 gal project. I have been talking to the owner of Orphek every day since September, working on making a good light even better. He asked me to be the Canadian rep a few weeks ago and I agreed because I'm confident that it is the best one out there.
If you haven't already seen this here it is.http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1811725&page=275
My new light will be hear this week and I can't wait.
