LED Lighting

Hi Everyone
I have recently purchased a second-hand 4ft tank and equipment. The light unit is on it's last legs and was wondering if any members out there could suggest the most popular / reliable LED light unit that I could purchase (maybe some ideas on what type of spec I should be looking for). I intend to keep corals and a few fish.

What is the actual size of your tank (deep and high). 4 ft could be anywhere from 40 to 110 gallons.

Mounting options?

What kind of coral?

What are you looking to spend? You could go anywhere from 250 to over 2 thousand to cover the average 4 ft tank.

With that said, most any pendant type fixture is going to require 2 to cover it.

A strip like BuildMyLed (I have 2 for my 90, my personal LED recommendation) will give you perfect coverage left to right although depending on your dimensions and rock-scape you may not get full front to back coverage.

I have not had mine as long but am very pleased so far with my maxspect. Probably the best bang for buck fixture available from a reputable manufacture.

Reef breeders photon and they are on sale right now. When I did my research everyone liked them and the price was right. I would have light some of the bells and whistles of the radion but not at twice the price.

check out reefbreeders.com. IMHO thier Photon series is the best for the money. Many features that you normally get with higher priced units. Warranty and service are in the US. It is currently the only LED my LFS (who I trust immensely) recommends. I actually just oredered the Photon 24.

I have a 120 mixed reef with a Reefbreeders Photon 48. Growing LPS, SPS, etc with LOTS of color. I had such good success that I bought a Reefbreeders Photon 24 for a 56gallon column tank for Gigantea and Haddoni anemones.

They are programmable to 30 minute intervals and from 1% to 100% output on the light channels. On sale now too!

If you want to spend some money I'd look into the Kessil a360s. Not the best bang for your buck fixtures, but the modern design, amazing shimmer (better than any mh I've seen) and performance (keeping softies to sps growing and happy) is what sold me on them.

Yeah Kessils rock and the A360W series cover a 2' x 2' area so if its not a deep tank you can get by w/2 unless you want to keep clams and some of the more demanding SPS. Then you would need to go 3x on the A360N series. Right now there are some online selling new for under $300 a piece. So you could get in for ~ 6 - 9 hundred $.

The best LED I have seen looks wise is Kessil. They are the closest to halides I have seen. Still give you the shimmer without the disco ball effect of puck type or individual spread out leds. Radions aren't too bad with the disco ball but I still see it. AIs show it more. Then the reef breeders and cheaper Chinese fixtures probably show the most disco ball.
