LED lighting

I am setting up a new tank and was wondering if anyone has used the LED lighting. I know they are a bit on the high side but it seems like they have a good upside. Has anyone used one? What does everyone think?

Thanks,

Michael

If they're as good as they say then it's worth it after you factor in changing out MH bulbs constantly.

I have not done alot of research on them... however do they produce teh same PAR as the MH? O know the solaris are pretty cool, but they have only been out for a short time, is that really enough time to test them?

They claim the same output as a 250w 20K metal halide but which bulb/ballast are they comparing it to? That can be as low as 30 ppfd or as high as 120 ppfd. There are 175w mh's with 86 even so the claim is without a true reference.

I think it's a PFO bulb but they don't say which ballast - however that bulb tests towards the bottom no matter which ballast is used. I believe that they also put a piece of glass between the light and the water.

What does it mean when all the units from 12" up to 72", say:

The current design produces PAR light output levels equal to a 250W MH 20K

Is that per foot?

i think I misread the post too - sorry - I haven't heard about lighting the tank in the way you described. Is this sufficient to sustain corals, etc. It sounds interesting.

nemo's fish store in granite city illinois has a set up going. I talked to the owner and she liked it except for the price. I believe she told me a 36" long assembly cost 1200 or 1400 bucks! She suggested waiting for a price drop. I cant remember who made the one she had on display.

I didn't feel like checking but with reguards to "testing" duribility I would just check how long the warranty is good for... and what it covers IE-salt damage.
