Greetings all. just curious if anyone in our area has ever seen any tanks in person using the new LED lighting vs traditional reef lighting.. i was checking out this thread and it caught my interest... just wanted to see if anyone had seen it in person.. aparently you can program it for clouds passing, moon light etc and it cuts down on energy(40% less)/heat.. plus some people say the corals love it alot more. seems to good to be true.. does anyone around here have it or has anyone seen it in person?

I have seen some in person and they are AMAZING. Since I work there I probably can't say where but there's a hint :)

I love the LED lights by Solaris. In fact, I'm getting the 20K 400 watt, 72" version for my new 180 that will be SPS dominant. I have some running currently (since March '06), they are 250 watt, 20K and even SPS are doing fantastic under them (extremely colorful), but they are located very near the surface (the lights are over a Zero Edge so I can't move the corals any lower to experiment). I've done some experimenting with an orange/blue mushroom rock...broke it up and placed the different pieces under different lighting, including MH and the LED's and by far the LED's give the best color! To be truthful I was very skeptical in the beginning, but since trying them out I really do think lighting will be going in this direction as the hobby's technology moves forward. Can't wait to hear what Sanjay has to say about them at SRC next week! Should be very interesting. Matt's put together an awesome lineup of speakers and anyone who can get free really needs to take advantage of having a top notch conference at our back door and attend!

Go to SITC!!! They have had them running for a few months now on the zero edge tank. Internal temp max I've ever seen it is 85 F and the heat towards the tank is no warmer than the surrounding air. I'm doing it for electric costs alone:).

That's cool, sounds like they may have a lot of potential. I'll check them out at SITC. From the pics I saw the corals all "look" better under the lighting, but I wonder how they grow and how long the bulbs valuable light really lasts. I saw one stat that said 50,000 hours. that would be amazing. I was checking into the solaris. I bet this will be the wave of the future for reef lighting if it is all they say!

It certainly be interesting to see what the experts say at the SRC Conference on Saturday.
Sanjay Joshi will be giving his presentation on "Innovation in Marine Lighting" He will talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of lighting.
If your not already registered, come check it out.
