LED problem

One line of my custom LEDs are not coming on and one of the drivers is a little warm I am no use at any thing to do with electric so I need a little help I am willing to pay for it, so if any good reefer out there is willing to help please PM me the people who built the unit are no longer in the area :sad2:

Sounds like either one of the LEDs went bad or a soldering point came loose. Give a tug to each wire and see if one pops off. If not, find some one with a battery LED tester and test each led until you find the culprit.

Do you have a multimeter?

If you do, I would suggest putting it in continuity mode and checking for ground faults (clip one probe to the heatsink then march around the fixture, touching the other probe to each solder joint. Do this with the LEDs off and everything unplugged). If that turns up nothing, check that each LED functions as mentioned above, or with a multimeter in diode test mode.

I like to check for ground faults first because if they are present, they can really mess up testing of individual LEDs.

Also, if you can post the specific model or part numbers for the LEDs and the drivers we can probably help you choose a replacement if something is damaged.

Got pics? If we can figure out your problem but you don't trust your soldering skills, I might be persuaded to drop by and help you fix whatever parts are faulty. Troubleshooting takes the longest amount of time here

thanks for the help I have #5 ELN-60-48D drivers to power 51 LEDs hooked up to a reef keeper elite the setup is about a year old like I said I did not build this unit, the person that built it did a poor job

So meanwell drivers, good start. Do you know the make/model of the LEDs themselves? The good news is that driver troubleshooting is easy with the meanwells. The bad is if they are giving you trouble, ou have to replace the whole thing, which isn't the cheapest... I'm with DWZM though, more likely a short/grounding issue if they're per-built drivers like the meanwells. Are the lamps protected from splash and salt creep? Tat can be troublesome

The lights are about 14" above the tank and have no indication of salt, I looked at the connections to the LEDs and they seem to be good, if you give me an idea of what is wrong I will fix it and once again thanks for you time!!!!!!!!!!!!

Norm, I've got a problem with the LED's he built for us also. Do you think we can take any legal action? It was supposed to be guaranteed for 2 years, and about a month after he installed it the front bar of lights is dimmed.

I was also asking for help on this forum about a month ago - but we would need someone familiar with led's to come and take a look.

I was relying on who I thought was an 'expert' to guide me in the type of lighting best for my tank. So bummed out ....
