Santoki,
Have you got a build thread or more info on your DIY lights? I'm thinking about doing some DIY LEDs for a small tank I'm planning to both test the LEDs and keep a few things I don't want in my main reef (Hydnophora, for example), so any info would be appreciated
I may have to get 2 of the blue Suntubes to try on my main reef as well... could be just what I need for a little shimmer in my system and a little more blue to my 384 watts of PC lighting
Hi Mykel Obvious,
sorry for the late reply... holiday family stuff
I purchased my LEDs and 8 9-slot circuit boards from Superbrightleds.com. I don't really know if they are the cheapest place, but their site was easy to navigate. They did not sell resistors so I had to purchase those from a different online vendor. The total cost of the project including the power supplies for the array if I remember correctly was somewhere around $130. I purchased two separate power supplies so I can control the 470nm and 420nm colors separately, but ended up just controlling them together. These Sunbright LED tubes where exactly what I had in mind when I started the project. I thought I had a good idea. I guess someone beat me to it and started manufacturing them
I didn't count how many LEDs where in each of these tubes, but it looks like it's more than 72, which makes it more cost effective than my DIY. If they come in the right wavelengths, these would be the perfect supplements for actinic without sacrificing shimmer.
I will try to take some pics of the DIY lights and PM them to you.
