LED Suggestions For a 46 Bowfront

Photon 16 or Photon 24 best bang for your buck (there are evergrow and other versions of these two, but I like the photons color combo).

I could be interested in these, but there is no information about how high above the tank they need to be. I also would like to get some kind of tank mount for them as opposed to hanging them from the ceiling. Is there such a thing? Can I just sit it on top of the tank?

After doing some research, it looks like the 24 would work mounted about 8" above the water column. I am also looking at the Taotronics TT-AL12. Opinions would be appreciated.

the taotronics is the same as a photon (which is the same as an evergrow) with a different color combination. I like the RB because of their two year warranty and they are easy to get hold of.

How about the evergrow IT2040? It has a 3 year warranty.

well im going to put this out there i love my maxspect razor 120w 16k on a 45 gal cube. 420$ and controllable. a lot of people are talking about those photon though. i havent seen them in action. just radion AI and the chinese ones, and the razor. when i saw the razor on a tank i bought it immediately

TaoTronics is not made by EverGrow (the RB Photon is). They both buy some components of the fixture from the same suppliers, but they are not the same light. I have both and I have had both apart and they are not the same. IMHO the EverGrow fixture had better components inside.

There are a lot of led fixture assembly companies in China and they all buy parts rather than make their own. So metal cases, circuit boards, hanger kits, heat sinks, dimmers, drivers and controllers are most often made by somebody else and therefore 2 or 4 or all of them may use the same supplier for one part and not another. So fixtures can be very similar but may not be the same if you look inside.

Take a look at the buildmyled fixtures. You can get multiple 36" long fixtures with tank rim mounts. I don't have them, or run LEDs (yet), but these look promising - depending on your lighting demands.

Well I just emailed reefbreeders and was told the photon 24 would work well for a mixed reef. The 32 is $120 more and may be overkill, not sure. The evergrow IT2060 is just about the same price as the 24 and is available at amazon.

I stand corrected. I thought they were just the same thing with different color combinations.

They are very close, just not the same.

It's the way manufacturing is done by many industries in China. There are dozens of companies making this part or that part. Then an assembly company like EverGrow buys parts from various suppliers and does the assembly, often without making a single part themselves. So another company can make a very similar unit but save money by using cheaper components inside and either sell it for less or sell it for the same price (it looks the same on the outside) and make a bigger profit margin. For a long time TaoTronics used cheaper fans and saved a few bucks. But enough people complained and gave them bad reviews and they upgraded the fans.

There are companies in China that are seeing the light and are starting to build better products (IMHO like EverGrow). But the culture is very difficult to overcome. In fact there is great competition to be the assembly company that uses the most of some specific parts and therefore gets a better deal from the parts manufacturer or even gets the exclusive use of a part, as long as they are buying most of the production. That's why there are so many similar looking products made by different companies in China. Just look at the Jebao DC line of pumps. They look and work very much like other DC pumps (many made in China for US companies) and sell for less than half the price.

You can call them 'knokoffs' but it's really just the culture of business in China. You could say they are even more of a market driven economy than we are. We protect a lot of companies here in the US... one look at my cable bill would tell you we could use some competition there! :lol2:
