Both of my current tanks went LED when it was time to replace bulbs. The sooner you switch the sooner you start saving on bulb replacement.
I will be the first to admit there is no ideal light for everyone but LED has come a LONG way since I built my first LED (It was DIY ~5 years ago and everything was purchased from China because nothing was available here except heatsink). I just replaced that very LED system about a month ago due to wiring issues and it was time to replace another fan. There is a WORLD of difference between those LED and today's LED.
If I had a tank rght now that needed bulbs or that simply needed a fixture I would go LED yesterday.
In regards to which ones I would go GHL Mitras. There are many high-end SPS tanks that are not only showing great growth but also tremendous coloration (some claim better than when they had MH). That says a LOT for current LED technology.
There is no ideal time once the tank is set up but the sooner you make the change the sooner you'll start reaping the benefits of it If you do make the change start low (I started at 20%) and go up gradually.
Light is light, led or T5 is irrelevant as long as you have the right spectrum and amount. No point in tossing out perfectly fine T5s. Check prices and developments on led when it is time to replace your T5 bulbs and be prepared to do a LOT of reading. There are very good led setups in a wide variety of prices and very bad led setups in an even wider variety of prices.
