LED's are bad for our Hobby

This thread is funny. A week ago on a FB post someone wrote something similar so I posted a few growth pics of my acros all pics were 4 to 5 months apart and 2 posters
Called me a liar then started posting pics from the web of other peoples growth with LEDs which were not very good at all. The original poster took the thread down on FB maybe cause I proved him wrong who knows. All I know is my coral growth under LEDs are phenomenal can't be happier and when people get their info and see pics of people's growth rate and color be sure it's someone who actually knows what they are doing and not a noobie who no matter what light they use their growth rate would be the same. Threads like these only try to convince people just starting with sps or people who never tried leds not to get the light but for people who use them
For years not months or weeks you will never convince us since most likely we used other forms of lighting because there were no LEDs when we first started and are happy with these lights. Seriously don't see the point of these debates anymore.

Being a under one year reefer I have found that adjusting my Kessil A360we to be extremely difficult. I have burned and killed many coral with this light, but I am currently getting the hang of it.

I can totally see why people give up on LED lighting systems with the amount of difficulty that they entail. I myself go back and forth on whether I should try T5's or MH.

I think a lot of the discussion comes from people who have been doing this for a long time, In the past lighting has been pretty much put it in and turn it on and you are good to go, corals grow and color up. With LED not everyone has had the same success as you have have. Growth is always pretty strong with MH, but if you are coming from only knowing LED, you might think you are having great growth but have nothing to compare it to. For example here is a tank of mine grown from nothing but frags over an 18 month period.

That is what I think of as normal growth for 250 watt MH.

Unfortunately you are not alone. When I was new the LFS told me all I needed was a 2 bulb normal output florescent fixture, tiny air stone skimmer and tap water top off/water changes . Needless to say I killed lots of corals and fish.

My problem is finding another lighting system to fit over an 18in cube. Most T5 fixtures are 24in... :(

Your light will work. Get the color you like dialed in then do a multi-week acclimation from 50% of what power you want to run. Really no reason to get another system.

After reading the March tank of the month I have a hard time believing LED's are bad for the hobby. Elliotts tank looks pretty damn good for lights that aren't good for the hobby.

Thanks for the pep talk. :) One starts to doubt oneself.

I use a Kessil in my frag tank with about 8 inches of water. I run it at 80% intensity for 10 hours, color 50% for 8 hours and 80% for 2 hours. I've gotten better results with it at those levels, but still not satisfied. I used to have one MH over it and that was just flip the switch easy. But I am trying to get some experience with LED without risking the main tank.

Why would the average hobbyist share data and specs (which you can find yourself) over real user experience? All LED's are great on paper, it's the users trial and error which are pushing better results, NOT agenda driven info from companies promoting their product.

Jammy, have you ever run halides? I have been running 400w for years and never needed a chiller. It doesn't really matter. I don't get personal with equipment. If halide or t5 didn't perform for me, they would be on the chopping block. No matter how you justify your point of view, the simple fact is that LED is extremely problematic with SPS corals, this is the SPS forum. Not sure why we're discussing Zoa since you can growth them under a non-led desk lamp:lolspin:

Just to show you where I'm coming from, here is 13 months under 400w radium + t5, and blue led reefbrites.

Hey man, that purple monster is supposed to be a slow grower. No fair!!!! lol Nice SPS man.. almost forgot this was a SPS forum and not lighting and equipment hahahah.

I had a coral crash back in January to May till I found out the cause. Started restocking my tank in probably July. Pic was taken in august or sept. My tank has 4 AI sol blues. This is about 5 months of growth

JammyBirch Here is the pic of my prostrate that was in my 125 before I tore it down, had a guy hold it running blue and white leds for 9 months and this is what I get back. All pics under radiums on m80 ballast only lighting.

If this is considered good color for leds great, looks horrible under halide. Took him a mo to kill the whole colony and has one other frag left same as what I got back from him. Still waiting on pics of your great color and growth shots.

BAETech2004 do you have pics of your tank somewhere would love to see?

hart24601 That clam is 4 yrs old in that pic started at 1 1/2- 2", I traded it off as it was getting really big I have a pic of it somewhere in the 5 gal bucket to show size took up the whole bottom of bucket.

The new TOTM has decent colors I have seen 4 tanks now with leds and decent color. I hope he is really happy with them and they work for a long time, don't have to replace ballasts, chips, or end up upgrading for a long while with $5000-$6000 in lights to replace at $400 a pop.

xxxduke62xxx you can barely make out the corals in the first pic.

Most of the people recommending leds come off the a Jehovah's Witness, these are the best light ever and you know nothing if you disagree. I still don't see how people think that by changing intensities of certain leds colors that it will fill in the missing spectrums, if it isn't there it isn't there I don't care how much you turn a knob. They hurt your eyes also at least the rb's. They are recommended to all the newbies whether they are asking for opinions on a halide setup or t5, no you don't want old tech you need the new tech. They get frustrated and quit, just one less reefer and dead coral and fish.

The one thing they do do is increase sales as there is a new better model that comes out every yr for you to go buy, so much for that 5 yr pay off. Not sure why most think if you run halides that you have to have a chiller, I don't have one. You see tanks running t5's and/or leds that have chillers. Everything they told people when leds first came out is being proven wrong.
