LEDs for DIYers

For those who want to experiment, these LEDs from Philips rate approx. 100-180 lumens depending on the power driver you use. The link is to a white LED (there's many other colors on the site), pre-mounted on an aluminum base (it acts as a heatsink as well as making it easier for the end-user to solder). Take a look at the data sheets, they provide much more information than a marketing release.

If my math is right, you would only save about $20 making a 5-LED unit yourself, but it opens up a world of customization. Besides, who can put a price on that feeling of dread when you plug in your multi-hour project only to find that nothing happens?
