LEDs: Where do i begin

So, looking to upgrade my system and I am looking into LEDs. Now my question(s) are where the heck do I begin. I've watched many videos on comparisons of different fixtures, read lots of information about LED fixtures and I'm still lost. I guess I just have a list of questions that fellow reefers can help me with...so here I go.

Color Spectrum?: I know a lot of the new fixtures have an almost "unlimited" color change possibility, but what colors really matter to the corals? Should I just go with blue and white lights or buy a fancy fixture with many different color options.

Degree of Optics?: I'm looking to get a tank the 48x24x16(Frag Tank) what degree of optics should I get and how will that selected degree benefit the corals in the long run.(And what about upgradable lenses for some fixtures)

How many fixtures to get?: Should I only be getting 2 fixtures or more for this tank.(I do have halides but would like to mix the LEDs and Halides together and have them run a completely different time settings) or even just work my way onto the LEDs.

LED Fixtures or Strips?: Should I buy a full on fixture like a Radion or AI, or go with reefbrite strips. Would strips grow coral just as effectively as a fixture would?

What fixture to really buy?: From personal experience what has everyone gone with that has bought LED and have had great outcomes with them(using them for more than a year)

OT: Dimmable T5s?: What about dimmable T5s would this be the same as getting LEDs that dim what's the benefit of these T5 fixtures such as ATI that can dim?

Do I need to get a fixture with dimming capabilities?: What if they don't dim will it hurt or "burn" the corals, or even create hot spots?

What wattage?: I see that there is 3w, 2w, and even 1w LEDS what's the big difference and should I go higher than 3w?

DIY Fixture?: What is the benefit other than $$$ wise for doing a DIY instead of buying a name brand fixture?

Please help me with this! I know this is A LOT of information to cover but this will benefit my knowledge and the knowledge of others also looking to take the path of going LED and of course benefit corals and the growth they receive. Thanks!

I ran 2 ai sols over my 90 and never had an issue, kept sps lps and softies i just downgraded and am only running 1 now that i used to have over my frag tank so im selling the other2 with rails if ur intrested pm me

Go to reef breeders website and there's also a forum on here that will answer any and all questions you have about LEDs. I have had my reef breeder LEDs for almost a year and I can keep anything with these lights. IMO these are the best lights but don't quote me on that since I've never owned any other LED light fixtures

Basically go one of the following and you will be happy. Radions are on sale right now.
1. Radion
2. AI
3. Mitras
4. Pacific Sun
4. Vertex Illumina

Reef breeders should at least be #5. They do everything that the other expensively over priced led light fixture do. I think if my lights cost more then my whole system or close to it then that's a problem.

I'm about to buy some LEDs for my 390 Gal that I'm setting up. I was looking at Kessil's. Is there any specific reason you left them out of your list, or just don't have experience with them? I just want to make sure I'm not missing something as I thought they were right at the top of the line with Radion and decided on them over Radion specifically for their controllability with Apex controller, even though that's coming in about a month for Radion too. Thanks!

Howie. Have you seen Kessil LED's in action? They are nice lights but my biggest complaint is the shadowing. Because the light exit's from such a small point source it causes shadows as it falls. In smaller tanks this affect does not matter that much. But in larger systems, it can cause problems. A coral at the top of the tank will shade others below. Even with the wide angle option, it can be tough to light larger aquariums with Kessils.

I've only seen them through online videos. Just started research on what to get earlier this week. I want the top of the line (to an extent) but just not sure what to go with and how many. I see the price of Radion's and most other posts I've read so far have them as top or second to Kessil, but I liked that Kessil's were a little less and fully controllable with Apex, then saw Radion's will be also in about a month. My tank is 96 x 31.5 x 30.5. I've had recommendations of 4, 6, or 8 A360N's due to the depth being 30", so narrow angle is better for me. How is the depth on Radion's for taller systems? How many might I need? I plan to have a full mix, meaning softies, LPS, SPS. Thanks!

Do they still sell Gen 1 Radions anywhere and are those cheaper than the newer models? LED's are so expensive....

Ive been mostly looking into both the radions AND AI(not the older versions) they both have good reviews and bad but I am more concerened about the blue/white lighting part. I see that they both have added colors into the light itself and im just worried that with not enough blue and white light that would cause a problem...any one have experience with these lights for more than a year and have had good growth results(maybe with pictures)

They both have pretty of lights and power to do what you are trying to accomplish. The Pros have great color and are on sale! I have had Radions since day 1 and they work well. A couple of my friends have AI and like them as well.

What type of corals are you looking to keep? Sps i would stick wth the Radion pro, GHL mitras or ATI led powermodule t5 fixture. Lps and softies, the AIs work but prepare for colorbanding. Kessils are nice but the dramatic shadowing they create can hider proper growth and color. I've never used the reefbreeder fixtures so no comment on them
