I am plaining on making my LED light for my 96" x 24" x48"t reef tank center overflow in the bottom. I plan on keeping SPS ,clams, anemones. How does this LED set up look?
i am getting this set up from http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1976062 but adding a few more LEDS

(8) alum U channel
(144) CREE XP-E Royal Blue
(96) CREE XP-G Blue
(5) Inventronics 120w driver - 2100mA
(60) 60 degree optics. 30 on each end U channel
(180) 40 degree optics
I didnt list everything but it will be around $2,400

I did have a 96" x 24" x 24" before I got this and what going to use this set up

(48) CREE XP-E Royal Blue
(48) CREE XP-G Blue
(16) CREE XM-L neutral White
(3) Inventronics 120w driver - 2100mA
Was told by the LED supplier that it was around a 12K look. I want a bluer look. this set up would be around $1,300

Is there a better ? I would rather use CREE LEDs bc they seem to still be better than aquastlyes or off brands

First,I also recognized CREE LED quality and reputation
and think around $2,400 will be better than other one, i wanted to see what kind of effect

If you are going to spend $2400 for the setup, why not just spend a bit more and make it dimmable, that way you'll have flexibility of mixing the color without the thought of "i wish i've added more blue/white ect.." when you're done w/ the build, just a thought

it will be dimmable. I will be able to control both colors separate.

What color would the (144) CREE XP-E Royal Blue, (96) CREE XP-G Blue Look like 12k,14k,20k?

Later down the road I could always add (16) CREE XM-L NW

That seems like a 20k+ look. I would add the 16XM-L to get a nice 14 or 12k high noon look. The oXM-L also adds to you over all PAR.

Man! That will be like 35k look... no whites? How much bluer do you want to go? You are borderline UV here... (just kidding), but its not going to look good w/all the blues and no whites. You still want to have some semblance of "normal" light don't you? If you are going to just have RBs and Blues its all going to be as if you just put a blue filter on a flashlight (a very bright one). Everything is just going to look blue, and shades of black in there, no other colors, literally... unless from ambient light.

Spacey

I realized cool white is what to use. So 144 RB & 96CW what color temp would that be close to?? If that is too blue or not enough light I plan on adding 16 XM-L NW later down the road if needed.

See that's the thing, that is why its good to have dimming on the LED's, so you can dial in the amount of blue and white (and any other color if you go RGB). If you just fix X x RB and Y x CW its going to be stuck to that level. Not sure exactly but 144 RB to 96 CW would probably be about 20k at least, but its different kind of blue... it's a lot more intense compared to say Halides @ 20k. So it's kind of tough to peg it exactly. Normally people go half RB / half CW and then play w/intensities to set the exact shades of each to their liking.

Best,

Spacey :)

THIS^^^ You have to be able to dim it or you may fry everything you have. You also have nearly infinate color choices with a controller/dimmer.
