Awesome you guys are coming around to give us a schooling. Copps and ROAB what do you think about the 60-120 bucks per 3/4" this coral is going for? or am i touching a sensitive subject?

Sensitive?:p Come on... :) I agree with Alex on this one... That's a very reasonable price considering the demand for this coral. We as reefers put alot of effort into growing beautiful sps like these, and I think it's a small price to pay considering it's the price of an average wild colony. I pretty much cap my frag prices at $75, with only very few going for $100... not because that's the highest price I could get, but because I think that's fair... Some colonies I have have very high demand and slow growth rates, like the Oregon tort, and others like the encrusting montis (Superman, rainbow, sunset) are tough to frag, grow only two dimensionally (as opposed to three), along with having incredible demand. I think if reefers provide excellent service and quality healthy frags prices in that range are fair. What bugs me is when online vendors get in wild corals and charge prices as if they were captive frags. One particular instance came from a vendor that found Volkswagon size colonies of wild Superman-like montipora a while back, and despite having a huge supply for dirt cheap, charged captive raised prices for small frags just to take advantage of the market. The reason we're charging the prices is because we've all grown them from small frags ourselves, and you're getting a small piece of history as it came from the original colony... That means alot to and I think is kind of neat... You're paying for more than just the color, but rather it's your chunk of history, and whether it be $50 or $75 I think it's a small price to pay considering the money we dump into the hobby... Look at it also as an investment, as you could soon make the money back you bought the coral for (or you could just tell your wife/GF that!:D). People that complain about prices like these and say "If I grew out the Superman I'd charge $20 for 3 inch frags" have not grown these things out and don't have them available... and I guarantee that if they got a 1/2" frag and grew it for a year, and you went to their house and chopped off the growth they worked so hard for and offered them $20 they'd laugh... :D

that is so funny but so true at the same time. ive heard of the el cheapos complaining about the price but when they actually had a chance to grow outsomething desireable they ended up selling for market rate.

Whats even better is the ones that are thinking about paying the price for a high demand coral, wants to know how big the frag will be. They always want big frags for the same price. I was always glad just to find a frag.

Hah! That's another issue... I love when people come by locally and say... "Okay, but how much for the colony of (insert high demand piece I've grown for years)... will that bring the price down?" In my head I'm thinking "Is this guy kidding... I wouldn't sell that if he gave me his car!" :D

Gotta say I don't blame you... ;) This is true, very true..

Copps that is so true. I remember a guy that came by and looked at my oregon tort colony (was only 3-4 inches long). When I bought it it was maybe 1 inch and it took me a couple years to get it that big. Instead of wanting to buy a frag that was the original deal he asked if he could just buy the whole colony for cheaper per inch. Noway I would've sold him that colony for any amount. It had sentimental values. =D

I was always glad just to find a frag.

Amen to that, I was able to squeeze a quarter inch frag of the lemonade from Ming about 4 months ago, and was grateful.
It's still a quarter inch, but it's building a helluva base. :celeb1:

Thats the way I look at it. I consider myself LUCKY if I can just talk them into selling me a frag of what I'm looking for. A frag is better than no frag at all the way I see it.

garrick, it probably was in my tank at that time but u were probably fixated on other corals..haha.

You are probably right... there were definitely other acro's in your tank that I was busy drooling over.

Actually, I "think" I may have a piece of the lemonade... I just don't have a positive ID. I got it from Tat's and his frag looked really similar in his tank. But, I'll never know for sure and I can't claim that it's the real lemonade.

No biggie though... I'll just have to work your connections! Haha
