For me an all around lense would have a greater zoom. Like a 18-200mm You can do landscape to wildlife to portrait. I dont know canon products but nikon has these in your price range. I do know that tamron has an excellent new lens that I just got for my nikon and Im really happy with it. Most tamron products have a nikon and cannon version. The lens was about $600 Its a 18-270mm VR. It doesnt have a huge aperture, but no lens in this price range does.
Ouch, I dropped my 24mm F1.4 (expensive as hell lens!) on the floor the other day :rolleye1: - thank the Lord nothing happened except a loud clunk when it hit the ground - well except I think my heart might have stopped for a minute or two!
I use the 24-105 as my walk around lens. Personally I would like to have a little more zoom sometimes. That being said it was not worth the tradeoff of losing the fixed F4 aperature nor the quality of sharpness it produces. Those long spread zooms that go from very wide to very far do it all but IMO that comes at a price. Once of both light loss at the tel range and sharpness overall. If you're not a nit picker or use a tripod all the time (or don't mind bumping your ISO way up sometimes) you might not mind. Just my 2 cents.
