I am getting a nikon D40x and I have some lens options. It comes with the basic 18-55 and I have the choice of either the 55-200 f/4-5-6g or 70-300. What would be better for everyday applications and until I get my 105 lens. Thanks

Oh well. I went and bought the kit with the 55-200. I am sure I will get some good use out of it at my daughter 1st birthday in two weeks. Now all I have to do is to figure out this bad boy. :D

You made a good choice. I would only have suggested the 70-300 (which my wife uses) if you wanted to do a bit of wildlife shooting because of the extra reach. Otherwise, for the D40X, the 18-55 and 55-200 are a good combo for just doing everyday shots. Obviously not the greatest lenses in the line-up but they will serve you very well and help you refine your technique so that when you are able to upgrade your glass you will produce even more stellar results.

I went looking at the new nikon macro lenses yesterday. I guess it is only a matter of time now. :)

You did make a good choice however I would have went for the 18-135 55-200 or mst preferrably the 18-200 VR
the first option would allow you to not miss shots because of the need to change lenses. the second one would be just perfect for the convenience it offers.
I currently have the 18-200Vr and the 70-300VR and I try to use the 70-300 VR more when I don't need the wide range of the 18-200VR as the 70-300Vr is a bit sharper.
I also have a 17-50 2.8 Tamron which I use when I need faster shutter speeds to freeze action but the Tamron would not autofocus on your D40.
also the 18-70 would have offered more flexibility than the 18-50.
Which "new" macro lenses are you considering? the Nikon 105 VR is a very popular choice and doubles as a very sharp portrait lens if you can afford it.

None of nikon lenses (last i checked) have motors in them. Nikon chose to have the motors put in the bodies of their cameras when Canon decided to put them in the lenses of their cameras instead of the bodies. which is why nikon lenses auto focus faster then canon lenses

The Nikkor line all has "It's the world's first micro lens with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) and Vibration Reduction (VR)."

Well, I just brought my new baby home and I also got a new manfrotto tripod. :D I have so much too learn.
