Lens recommendation for D50

I'm looking for a every day lens, but one that is good at full tank shots as well. I have the kit Nikkor 28-80mm (which is pretty junky). I also have a Nikkor 50mm, which has great pictures, but I have to be back 15-20 feet to get a full shot of my 180 (which isn't possible).

I have the Sigma 28-80mm D, which does macros well. I also have the Sigma 105mm EX, which is the bombdiggidy ;) Point is, Nikkor branded is fine, but I'm open to other alternatives.

Not looking to break the bank, but don't want a $20 lens either.

My 17-55 was a great lens. DX, so it went when I went to FF, but if it weren't for that it would be my favorite lens today. Second only to my 24-70, which is the FF equiv to the 17-55.

Wow, those are way up there. Is there anything down lower in the range that will provide quality shots? I was hoping for sub 300-400 or is that just out of the question?

18-70mm 3.5-4.5 is a good lens. It is around $300. I got mine with my D70 back then and they still make it. It is a good walk around, can get you to a decent wide angle and has a good zoom range and wont break the bank.

snommisbor, I actually just borrowed that from a fellow reefer last night. I haven't had a chance to test it yet however.
